I was timing my engine and my brother pushed in the clutch and the crank moved forward almost 1/4 of an inch......

The thrust bearing could be changed in chassis but it's possible the crank may be worn and need machining or replacement. A clutch that's adjusted too tight with no play could put pressure on the thrust bearing and wear it out. You could try the in chassis job but it would probably would be a temporary fix.

Would this cause the clutch to shudder

Maybe but there could be some other problems with the clutch or flywheel etc.
