I will look for the sea foam and give it a try.  I think it is the compression.  The engine turns freely - almost too freely.

Kaiser Forum / Getting my 1953 Kaiser Manhattan started.
« on: October 12, 2012, 06:51:56 PM »
I have tried several times to get my 1953 Kaiser Manhattan started.  My Kaiser has not been started in over 10 years. I have taken the following steps - new starter motor, new 6 volt battery, new regulator, new spark plugs, cleaned ground wires, and replaced the distributor.  The motor turns over freely, but will not start.  A KF Club member suggested putting oil in each cylinder to improve or create compression.  I placed a small amount of 30 weight oil in each cylinder with no luck.  Is the oil too thin?  I have spark to the spark plugs, but it will not fire up.  I have tried to set the timing, but I can't find the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley.  Is the timing mark difficult to find on the pulley?  Any ideas will be appreciated.  I'm trying to get the car up and running before I start a full restoration.  Thanks Bob (10479)

Thanks, I will give it a try.  The motor turns over easily and the lack of compression could be the problem.  I will let you know, and any additional suggestions would be appreciated.  Bob

I'm attempting to get my 1953 Kaiser Manhattan started.  It hasn't been started in over 20 years.  I've changed the oil, put in new spark plugs, disconnected the fuel lines to prevent old gas from getting to the carburetor, and purchased a new type II six volt battery, and had the starter rebuilt.  With this work completed, I can get the engine to turn over, but I can't get it started.  I have spark from the coil, and I've checked the gap on the points and purchased a new rotor.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Could it be the regulator?  The battery and starter motor work great and the engine turns over very well, but it will not fire.  I've poured as in the carburetor - a little at a time, but still it will not fire.  Not even a pop. Bob

The tie rod problem is not the tie rod ends.  The rod is broken.  I need to find a tie rod for a 1953 Kaiser Manhattan.  Thanks for the help.

I need a tie rod for the driver's side for my 1953 Kaiser Manhattan.

I recently joined the KF Club and the forum's assistance has been great. I found a new windshield and a starter motor which were reasonably priced and shipped in a timely manner.  The advice and recommendations from club members has been accurate and useful. I want to thank the club members for being so helpful.   Bob

I will be in touch regarding the purchase of the 1953 Kaiser Manhattan windshield.  I had a family emergency and had to travel to San Diego.  My wife's 93 year old mother fell.  She is ok, but we needed to check on her.  Falls are risky at her age. I will be home on Sunday and follow up on Monday.  Thanks,
Bob

I took the starter motor to a "generator/starter motor" repair shop in Salt Lake City.  I don't have the number in front of me at this point.  My car is a 1953 Kaiser Manhattan with the Hydromatic transmission.  If you still need the starter motor number, let me know.  I will call the shop and get the number if necessary.  Bob

I will need your address and phone to follow up.  If you would rather call me, my home phone number is (801) 745-0599.  Thanks again,

I took the original starter motor to a Generator Rebuilding shop in Salt Lake City.  They called me a couple days later and said they couldn't find the "Drive Housing Cover."  This is the thick metal piece that connects to the starter motor and wraps around the drive gear. It eposes the drive gear area that fits against the flywheel gear teeth and holds drive line of the starter motor in place.  This part on my starter motor was broken and a big chunk of it is missing.  The generator shop said they could weld it back together if I had the other piece that broke off, but I don't have it.  The shop is searching, but complained that it was taking too much time and asked if I could do the leg work in finding the part.  I will try the locations you suggested.  With weekend, they are closed until Monday. I'm looking for a 1953 Kaiser starter motor.  The drive gear housing on my starter motor is broken.  I need to find the housing, but will buy a complete starter in necessary.  Also is the new high velocity 12 volt starter ok to use in my Kaiser which is still has a 6 volt system?
