General Discussion / Re: T96 tans leaks
« on: November 14, 2022, 09:40:47 AM »
Unless your mechanic sourced an NOS asbestos rope seal he likely used a Best Gasket Graphtite rope seal. My 161 f-head rebuild used one & it failed immediately. Two factory stated facts about Graphtite, 1: it's so slick it can spin in the journal if an included "locating pin" isn't installed in the bearing cap, 2: unlike OEM asbestos seals, there's nothing in the core of the rope that swells when soaked with oil. My rebuilder did not drill in the locating pin, but I was not about to give Graphtite a second try.
The transmission could possibly leak at two places in the front. The gasket for the front bearing retainer, or out the input shaft hole in the bearing retainer. Gasket would be a poor install, input shaft hole would be over filling. My T-96 gasket set did not have a seal for the input shaft hole but I installed a felt washer there anyway. No seal was present on teardown.
Rear main rope seal..............either source an NOS asbestos rope, (sometimes on ebay & willysjeepparts.com) or a non asbestos Sabo rope seal from Brazil which has a woven fiber exterior & a core that's supposed to swell when soaked.

Michelin started making radials in the 40's. I run a set of XAS (early 60's) model on my Aero. They're a round tread design for non power steering cars. The steering issues come with modern flat tread radials.

Willys Forum / Re: AERO WILLYS Front Suspension Parts - NOS

If anyone is planning to go to VT or PA for these parts they should also consider calling Peter DeBella (jeeps) in NY to see if he still has a collection of Aero parts. He buys out old Willys & Jeep parts inventories for his jeep sales. He told me for a couple years he had about a pick-up load of assorted Aero parts he wants to sell. He's too busy to sort & make a list, he wants someone to show up in person, make an offer & load them up.

These guys seem to have done the research not only optimum zinc content, but other additives & modifiers not usually mentioned. https://inrccca.org/product/classic-car-motor-oil/

Nice install!
I opted for 3 point front seat belts too. It's not uncommon to read about people getting killed in their classic cars, so I also decided that having SOMETHING gave my grandsons & I more of a survival chance than NOTHING. Seems there's enough demand to support at least a couple companies.
To answer 51ksrluxe's inquiry, Seatbelt Planet and Julianos both have full lines of modern equipment.

Try kaiserwillys.com or walcks4wd, also willysjeepparts & willysamerica. I have the 161 f-head engine & bought my clutch disc, pressure plate & throwout bearing from one of the first two. I often see 226 type parts on the jeep sites too. Quite a bit is same part numbers. Jeepsterman has some "crossover" parts too.

Here's what I used:
Napa GL1 90 weight mineral oil. I had to buy a gallon, but there's also other sources. Be sure to fill the trans & overdrive separately.

I used Royal Purple 10/30w high zinc break-in oil on my engine & was getting an intermittent low pressure light. It was so thin on the dipstick I got spooked & changed it out to Lucas 30w high zinc break-in oil, & plumbed in a mechanical pressure gauge at the front oil gallery plug next to the fuel pump. Turns out I had good pressure & a bad NOS sender unit, but kept the gauge till permanent oil recently went in after 500mi.
I've never been a big fan of multi weight oil in older engines due to lower pressure in the past but decided to try this oil after researching viscosity ranges & comparing to their specs. Their 15/40 oil is running the same pressure full hot in 90 degree weather as the straight 30. Downside is it's 12qt boxes & $20 shipping. https://inrccca.org/product/classic-car-motor-oil/#:~:text=Classic%20Car%20Motor%20Oil%20has%20been%20designed%20to,the%20car%20is%20stored%20and%20not%20run%20frequently.

There's "GL (1/2/3/4/5?)" ratings if I remember right. Most important is one without additives that attack the bronze parts in the T-96. I'll check in my shop later what I used in my Aero & post it.  I think you have a HJ rear axle, lube as indicated above.

I had a similar experience, emailed the secretary & got a "password reset" link. Did that & all is well now. Old password still works here.

That explains why it still looks like the "old" forum to me. Being an associate "member", no information was shared & I just assumed that the switch had been made during the time it was down, and for weeks after as just a "framework" version that I couldn't log in to.
So, reading between the lines from Jake deleting himself out of the conversation & from what you say...........it sounds like the group that wanted to charge for forum access won out.

Thanks for the info Konrad!

Please contact the Club President or the Club Secretary on discontinuing the free ride for non-members.  Their information is found in each issue of KFOCI MONTHLY BULLETIN and KFOCI QUARTERLY.
I don't receive either of those as an associate member. Neither did I receive any notification how to access the forum after the changes this year, hence my absence the past few months.
As for my question, it's pretty simple & straightforward..........this is the "General Discussion" category.......why the obfuscation? Paid members only now? Yes or no?

General Discussion / Paid members only?

Just found out how to find the forum again by asking on one of the KF facebook group pages. Someone mentioned but wouldn't confirm a comment that seemed to say this forum is now for paid club members only. Anyone here know if that's the new status quo?

I don't have a link but can share some info. Pictured is an OEM set no longer available, a set still in production in Brazil, and a set for Nissan engines that's supposed to fit. An internet search may turn up something OEM. You can also buy hollow rubber bar stock & turn them down on a lathe, which worked nicely for mine, last pic. Hope this helps.

General Discussion / Re: Universal Joint Boots for Frazers
« on: May 29, 2021, 09:43:19 AM »
Willys Aero uses a very similar looking boot and I found NOS boots & trunnion rebuild kits on ebay by regularly searching new vintage part listings. I ended up selling my trunnion parts to another restorer & had a replacement driveshaft built with modern cross joints. Northwestern Auto Supply in MI has a huge stock of vintage parts too.
