Gordie ,the car is kept outside on a hill in my driveway.

Boatingbill ,do you mean to wrap the chain where the Y bracket begins to split?(I just want to make sure)

I need to move the Kaiser 10-15 feet forward and back and i was wondering what is the best place to wrap a chain around to pull it forward.I did it before to my dads 63' valiant with a chain wrapped around the pitman and idler arms but I am not sure if there is a better way .Does it matter how far in or out i wrap the chain around the rear axle to pull it back?

Thank you

I was wondering how many miles a 226 can go before needing to be rebuilt?

Shade tree , in the manual it just says " remove head", it is the least detailed repair manual I have ever seen.

Kaiser Forum / Need help removing head after pebble fell in

Last week I was removing the spark plugs, and apparently a pebble was stuck on my face from looking under the car, because as soon as I removed the #2 plug,a pebble fell right into the hole :'((out of all the places it could have gone >:()I cant see it to remove it so I need to remove the head,I already have a head gasket, but I've never removed a head before so i need some help and have some questions

1.To remove the water outlet elbow do i just unscrew the bolts and pull it up ,are there any special precautions, when i replace the water elbow gasket do i need a sealer, how tight should it be torqued when I put back on?

2.To remove the distributor do i just loosen the 3 bolts on the head and pull it up?

3.The screw on piece for the heater hose on the rear of the head is pretty tight, what would i use to remove it?

4.When I undo the bolts for the oil filter container, how do i completely remove the container so i can paint it,and when i replace the filter do i need to fill the container with oil,do any of you have a recommended oil filter replacement.

5.There is a bolt coming out of the side of the head to the right of the ignition coil,it has a small wire attached to ground something, what is this bolt for?

6.I'm assuming the head gasket doesn't need a sealant,is this right?

7.Also while i'm here, how do i replace the manifold gasket? How tight do i torque the bolts when i put it back on?I also assume this gasket doesn't use sealant because it would get too hot.

Thank You for your help

I was about to start cleaning the sludge by the ways mentioned, but then I thought that if I did clean it ,wouldn't any loose sludge that didn't come out the drain hole block the pickup screen etc.?

Just wondering.

Kaiser Forum / What oil to use?
« on: November 02, 2015, 02:00:54 AM »
In the manual it says to use 10w oil ,but considering my engine hasn't been rebuilt and has a little over 101,000 miles, should I use a thicker oil now in fall/winter due to wear when I try to start it for the first time in years, or use 10w  ?

I've heard of other non rebuilt kaiser owners using 30w ,but they said they don't drive in winter. What about using 10w-30?

Is Shell Rotella T Triple Protection 10W-30 Heavy Duty Motor Oil good to use?Does it have enough zinc?Does it contain a detergent?

Thank you ,and hopefully I won't need anymore help for a while, well at least not this week ;D.

Kaiser Forum / Re: How do I remove the oil fill tube on a 226?

I just got it off and there is a pile of fine rust coming out the hole the pipe goes into.
How should I remove that rust blocking the hole, should I try to remove it with my fingers acting as a shovel ,or would that push the rust inside?

I started that thread, but decided to start a new one since this isn't about removing  the oil pan, but instead removing the oil fill neck.

My neck doesn't do any wiggling,it is very solid.Should I spray WD-40 around it to help?Should I tap it with anything, like a rubber hammer?

My oil fill neck has a LOT of rust inside and a buildup at the bottom of the tube

How do I remove it to clean the rust?

13
I measured the outside at about 9 inches, and i can only get the tape line in a little under 9 1/2 inches, it is blocked by all the rust, looking through the drain hole on the pan it looks rust free, with a light coating of old oil.

Thank you guys

I just ran into a BIG problem,I decided to shine a flashlight down the oil filler neck, and it is filled with rust,so much loose rust in it that the hole is BLOCKED with rust :( :'(,Is there anything at all that I can do,or is a rebuild necessary. For some reason I cant paste a picture.

I'm trying to get my '48 started(been sitting since 70's)
I decided to check for sludge before attempting to start it ,and I can feel some with my finger in the drain plug hole.

So I want to know if it possible to remove the oil pan to clean the sludge WITHOUT lifting the engine on a 226 because i don't have an engine hoist and can't afford to buy one?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If I can't remove it without touching the engine, then how safe would it be to attempt starting it with some sludge in the oil pan and a new oil filter,(if i shine a flashlight in the hole i cant see any sludge on the bottom of the pan, just feel it around the hole with my finger when making a U shape).
