Parts For Sale & Wanted / 1949 Kaiser Traveler Self-Centering brake shoes
« on: January 02, 2018, 01:38:15 PM »

I'm in need of the self centering brake shoes.  Apparently Kaiser used standard and self centering brake systems.  Standards won't work unless I change out the whole system.  I do understand these style brakes were used on different vehicles, Studebaker and maybe a 60's Chevy Pickup. DOES ANY ONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON FINDING THESE SHOES OR KNOW OF WHAT OTHER VEHICLE THEY MAY HAVE BEEN USED ON.  I've tried KF Parts and Chris says he doesn't have any available.....only the standard style.

I've already rebuilt my master and wheel cylinders and replaced many of the linkage rods/pins so changing out to the other system is not gonna work for me.  I've looked every where the best I can (for not being computer literate) and just can't seem to find the right part or know where to look for alternate parts without doing a visual.  I definitely don't want to buy online and find out I'm getting the wrong shoes.

I'm also looking for window rubber seals/gaskets.  I definitely need the front (pair) and rear rubber ones.  I understand that they may be the same as the Sedan.  I've tried Rudy and got a no go from him.  Any other suggestions??  I'd even go for a good used set, especially the rear (don't have one at all).  My car is gonna be a daily driver, not a trailer queen so I go with what I can get.

I'd love to finally take my car to some events and to the Northwest Spring Meeting but I just can't do it without windows!!  I definitely need some help.

Thanks for any help I can get.

I've got a 1949 Kaiser Traveler in some form of restoration.  I need to find front (pair) and rear "trunk lid" rear window rubber seals/gaskets.  Mine are totally shot.  I've tried Rudy with no results.  Does anyone have or know where I can purchase new ones?  OR does any one have any pretty decent used ones available.  I DO NOT have the rear window rubber at all but understand that the Sedan rubber seal is the same, just a little longer.

I'd love to finally take my car to some events and to the Northwest Spring Meeting but I just can't do it without window!!  I definitely need some help.

Please............somebody out there has to have something that will work.  My car is not a trailer queen but will be used basically as a daily driver.  For used stuff, all it's gotta do is fit, look decent and work.  If necessary I can try to slightly modify rubber seals/gaskets to make them work.

I have a '49 Kaiser Parts List and am using it for references.  But it only seems to list one type brake system with only a view of the rear brakes.  My Kaiser '47-'49 Service Manual does not address the self-centering.  According to one bulletin I have, I need to look at Service Bulletin #163.  The Wagner Bulletin has a good explanation but does not have any part numbers either.  I haven't finished reading all 8-10 pages of it yet either.

As for the KFOCI Handbook, I don't have one.  I've been a Club member since the late 80's or early 90's but never got one.  I guess I'd better see about getting one.   For some reason, I don't seem to get any updates either.  I only get the monthly newslettter.

Thanks for bringing me up to speed a little bit.

Thanks for all the feedback.  It's pouring rain here in Oregon and the car is on stands outdoors.  Hopefully I'll be able to get out there in a soon to continue dismantling the brakes.  I really appreciate all the help.

From what I've heard, if I decide to switch to regular brakes, I'll need to change everything.....all the way down to the backing plates.

I have a '48 Kaiser Special parts car...........will any of those pieces work to switch out to regular brakes?

Thanks for the PDF files.  I'll read them tonight and inspect my brake systems.  Just at a quick glance, it appears I have the self-centering system on my Traveler.

Thanks for the response but I'm more interested in knowing WHAT are self-centering brakes......hopefully for someone who's worked on them.

I've got a '49 Traveler and am presently doing a complete brake rebuild.  While checking online for wheel cylinders and brake shoes, I see them listed for most years but has a notation that they are not for 1949-1951 self-centering brakes.  What are self-centering brakes AND do all 1949 Travelers have self-centering brakes?

Also does anyone know the Wagner or Dorman numbers for front/rear wheel cylinders?

Thanks for any help so I don't order the wrong parts.

Don't know if you're still looking for pieces and parts but I have an almost complete '48 Deluxe that went through a flood and not restorable.  Let me know if there's anything you still need.  charley@budget.net

Don't know if they are the same or not but I have an almost complete '48 Kaiser that's beyond rebuild capabilities.  If the safety catch will work, email me at charley@budget.net.  Hope this might help.
