Thanks Fid for your reply and advises.

As I replaced the relay by a brand new one (I had a spare with me), so I guess that it is working OK, but sure I will check the whole wiring to ensure there is no issue on that. Great idea.

Do you know any way can use to check the governor without taking it out??

Well, I checked both the the solenoid and the relay, and they looks ok. When I manually drive them though the kickdown switch, they seem to work OK...

Kaiser Forum / Overdrive issues

Hello everyone,

While driving my 53' Manhattan to the south of France, I faced major overdrive issue. There are several  symptoms to the problem, and even if I suspect something wrong with the governor or the shift fork switch, I'm far from being comfortable with my diagnostic.

In summary, here are all the issues I noticed.

The problem is intermittent. The overdrive sometime work normally with the gear shifting down and the freewheel working at the deceleration. This looks Ok, except that the gear shift down and the freewheel starts at a lower speed than usual (my OD worked perfectly before the issue appeared).

When the problem appears more severely, the OD does not shift the gear down and the freewheel does not work neither.
When this appends, once I stop the car, it is impossible to engage the reverse gear and the OD manual lock command cannot be actioned.
If I restart the car, the OD works on higher gear and only shifts down if I use the kickdown switch, and this appends on all 3 gears.
The OD can sometime be disengaged by manually actioning the kickdown switch (not really safe when driving I must admit) while moving the car a little bit. This allows to manually lock the OD again and have the possibility to engage the reverse gear.

The only thing I did so far to try to solve the issue is that I replaced the OD relay by a new one, and this did not changed anything to the issue.

Any help you can provide on this issue will be more than greatly appreciated.

Have a great day all.

PS: I apologies for not always using the proper words, terms or expressions, but being a Belgian guy and thus with French as mother language doesn't help me in this. I promise I will try to keep improving.....

Starter switch relay might be tired. Try to shunt it with a screw driver and see if the starter is running....

Kaiser Forum / 1952 Manhattan jack
« on: February 20, 2021, 02:24:34 AM »
Morning all,

I know the subject has been discussed many time, but I need some advice for the jack of my 1952 Manhattan.

As it is that difficult to find one (considering that on the top of everything I'm located in Belgium) I planned ti buy this king of equipment,

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Cric-Agricole-Farm-Jack-Pour-Tout-Terrain-4X4-Atv-Cliquet-2-5-Tonnes-Max-1-1-M/264482739195?hash=item3d946653fb:g:gWwAAOSwmxVdkeJA

The first question is do you believe that this could do the work? and second, how and where on the car should I hook the car when needed.

Thank in advance to everyone and have a great day.

Hello,

Is that difference constant at any speed or only when driving at a fixed one? If at 65 m/h for example, look at tire wear or even air pressure, they both impact the total wheel diameter and therefore speed calculation.

At the end of the day 5 m/h diff is not that big ......

Kaiser Forum / Re: Oil pump

Hi Joe

Thanks for your input.
In fact here, this is not one of the gears that caused the hole. This was done by somebody machining the cover, and I just don't understand why. (I tried to attache some picture to this answer, but with no success).

When the cover is on and looking through the small hole (± 4 mm diam) I can see the gears rotating. Could confirm that there is no hole on the cover?

Thanks again.

Kaiser Forum / Oil pump
« on: February 01, 2020, 10:06:15 AM »
Morning all,

I'm (finally) working on replacing my oil pump. I removed the pan, and the pump is now off the engine.

I now have a question that some of you might feel strange. On the iron stamped cover, I have a grove machined in the inside of the cover and a hole is drilled in it allowing the oil to get out of the pump (directly to the pan). I don't know why it is there, and to be honest, even don't know if it is supposed to be there. I have worked out and rebuilt many other oil pump (but that's the first one for a Kaiser), but that's the first time I see this.

As mentioned earlier, my oil pressure is not good, but controlling the two pumps gears, I feel they are not that worn. I have a new set, so I will replace them anyway, but the question is now could the hole in the cover be the cause of lack of pressure??? <should it be there, and if not do I have to fill it?

Many thanks in advance for your answers and advises.
Have a great day.

Kaiser Forum / Trunk lock drives me crazy
« on: December 21, 2019, 01:28:33 AM »
Morning all,

I'm having lots of troubles trying to set the position of the trunk floor hook on my 4 doors 52 Manhattan. The mechanism is brand new and work perfectly well when closing it manually by inserting a screw driver in the mobile lock and reproducing the hook movement. The key unlock phase also work fine.

I tried to move the trunk floor hook higher ans lower, moved it front and rear, tried to tilt it, but no positioning seems to make it work.

Should anyone have a picture of it, and maybe some sort of procedure to properly set that part.

Many thanks in advance for your help and advises.
Have a great day.
JJ.

Kaiser Forum / Re: orientation of brake shoes-1953 Kaiser
« on: August 18, 2019, 02:40:39 AM »
Hi,

I bled the the whole circuit several time and tried to adjust the lining as much as I could.

There is one more thing I would like to try. While removing one of the drum, I notice that the shoes "bite" the drums just close to the wheel cylinder and almost not at the opposite side. This tells me (and I easily admit I can be wrong) that the force applied close to the cylinder is most probably much lower than what it should be if the shoes were pushing first at the opposite side of the drum (because of the moment arm).

I plan to add a substrate plate to move the lower side of the shoes closer to the drum and see what it does. I'm not expecting a miracle from that, but that could improve the performance a little bit.

I don't know if my explanation is really clear, but being French-speaking and my English speaking skills being what they are...... I just did my best on this one......

Wish you all a great day..
JJ.
