Henry J & Allstate Forum / Re: 51 Henry J Carburetor gasket issues
« on: August 12, 2017, 11:08:24 PM »
Hello there Corsairdelux,
Your comments were taken as you intended them and I will share the information with Bill at Pacific Carburetor. I'm pretty sure he covered all the items you mentioned and he charged me enough that he damn sure should have. Thanks for taking the time to write all that down. I'm always interested to here another person's opinion!
I think the comments about non-oxygenated gasoline are more to the point in my case. I think I'll look into that, but have no idea where I can buy it at this point.

I'm really surprised to hear that no one else in the club has had a problem like this.
Thanks for all the input guys! I always feel a little bad about asking questions but never being able to contribute any answers!

« on: August 11, 2017, 02:26:38 PM »
My Carburetor is listed as a Carter YF 820S, SA, SB. It is a Carter YF in any event. Not sure about the rest.

The car runs great once it gets going but it runs very rough at idle and puts out exhaust loaded up with carbon.

I have had the carburetor rebuilt about every 9 months to a year. 3 times.

My carburetor guy says the gas we use now days (in California?) eats the gaskets up, especially the diaphragm pump gasket. The last time it was rebuilt, he told me to use only Standard Oil or Shell gas because of the additives they use. He also suggested using Marvel Mystery oil each time I fill up. He also told me I don't drive the car enough to keep everything running smoothly which is probably true but I can't see how that would affect the gaskets.

Well, old Henry is acting up again! My carburetor guy suggested that replacing the carburetor with a Weber carburetor may solve the gasket issue since they're made differently. I hate to not use the original carb but replacing the rubber gaskets is getting kind of expensive. The conversion kit and Weber carb are also kind of expensive.

Has any one else had this problem?

I am open to any and all suggestions. How about you Fid?

Mike

Hi Fid,
It appears to be a pipe that has been formed. Is that right?
Since the part appears to be laying on the floor does that mean you have an extra one? I can always hope!

Thanks,
Mike

At the National convention in Puyallup, it was pointed out to me that I was missing the "Reinforcement,Upper Radiator Support", figure 18-2 item 4, group 18.147 in the H. J. parts manual.

I have been looking at a lot of pictures trying to see if it is a bar or a piece of pipe. As far as I can see there are a lot of Henry J's that are missing that part! I'm assuming it will be hard to find one so I would like to make one if possible. Of course flat stock would be a lot easier to work with than pipe, but I'd like mine to be as close to stock as possible.

If anyone knows where I can buy one I'd rather buy one than make it.
If anyone has a good picture of one that would also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Dave! ;) I plan on using RainX in any event.
I called the guy in New York this morning and he assures me he will have my wiper motor ready in plenty of time.
I just kind of want to watch the wipers flop around like a real old timer, just like me!!  :)

Thanks to all as well!

No luck for me on opening up the wiper motor. The gasket disintegrated when I pulled the top off. No way for me to figure out exactly how the gasket was made. I also couldn't find the right thickness gasket material locally.
The motor was full of old goopy junk. If the gasket had stayed intact I would have probably been OK.

All comments were much appreciated!

I guess I'll call the place in New York that rebuilds them tomorrow.

Wish me luck!

Does anyone have any ideas how to get my wipers working better?
I am planning on trying to make it from southern California to the National Convention in Puyallup Washington with My 51 Henry J. I have taken the pivot assemblies and linkage apart and gotten them freed up. I think the problem must be in the vacuum wiper motor. It seems to stick where it starts to return.

I found a place on the net  http://www.wiperman.com/  that says they rebuild them for $99.00 + $8.00 shipping. I haven't called them yet, but will Monday.

Any ideas (other than RainX) would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes FID, that's the one.
I thought I should be able to get the whole master cylinder out as well, but the pin attaches the brake pedal and the brake pedal goes through the floor board. It's a shame it isn't seized on the pedal instead of the push rod. If it was frozen to the pedal I could get it out.
In your pictures, the brake pedal is to the left side of the first 2 red circles you drew. It's misleading since the brake pedal has an offset in it.
As you can see, the pin goes right through it. The pin has to be driven toward the frame and there is just no room. If I can't find the original bolt, I think I can use a tempered bolt with threads and double nut it. There can't be much pressure side to side since the pin only has a cotter key to retain it.
I think I can get the old pin out by cutting the head off with a Dremel cut off wheel.

Thanks for your input!

I am installing a remote fill kit for the master cylinder on my 1951 Henry J and need to remove the master cylinder to do so.

There is a pin that connects the brake pedal to the bracket at the cross member and the push rod. That connection has to come apart to get the master cylinder out of the car as far as I can see.
The pin is free at the pedal but is frozen solid on the push rod. So far I have tried everything but heat to get it loose.

I will probably need to find a replacement pin and try to cut it off with a Dremel tool.

I think this Henry J. has set in a field somewhere for years at some time in it's life. Everything I do to it is a struggle!

If anyone has any suggestions, please jump in there!

I didn't have the proper puller but I was able to use a generic 3 prong puller.
Believe it or not I actually had a socket, I think I also used it on the nut on the front of the crank shaft as well.

On another note, I am also installing a remote fill kit for the master cylinder. There is a pin that connects the brake pedal to the bracket at the cross member and the push rod. That connection has to come apart to get the master cylinder out of the car as far as I can see.

I will probably need to find a replacement pi and try to cut it off with a Dremel tool.

Thanks a lot FID!!!!! Your a life saver!
I wish I had posted this to the forum sooner. I have been going crazy trying to find the part on the internet.
Also, I was thinking I might have to remove the whole gear box to get the old seal out!
I wasn't real crazy about the grease idea.

You are truly a hero to us Henry J owners.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get parts to rebuild or service the steering gear box on my 1951 Henry J?
I have a bad leak in the steering gear shaft seal. If I can find the part, I would like to replace the seal.

A buddy told me that lots of guys with old cars just use bearing grease in the box rather than 90 weight gear oil. I live in California so I probably could get away with the grease getting stiff because it doesn't get all that cold here. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Any other suggestions?

OK,
Now that we're all up to speed on what it's called, the question remains the same.
Does anyone have one or know where a guy might obtain one?
