Kaiser Forum / Re: Upholstery Estimate

Yep, he isn't in it to make money.  This car was purchased by him and his college buddy back in the late '60's when they attended the local university.  I believe they intended to share the car but from what he's told me, the car was driven only a couple of times by them then parked.  I begged him to bring it to my shop as the critters were slowly but surely destroying it.  I personally love the car and have tried to get him to sell it to me but to no avail.  I at least got it running and drive it up and down the road and our driveway  :) He does want it fixed up and driveable, but given that he's a dairy farmer, his budget is not very large.  I'll send the sample to SMS and see what they have to say.  Thanks again, I sure hope he lets me drive it so I can hear some of the stories-I love talking about cars.

Thanks for the reply Jim, I saw your photos and must say that the upholstery sewn up is breathtaking!  The fellow that owns the Kaiser I'm working on is trying to decide what the cost differences are as he has realized that the value of the car is not very great.  Thanks again.

Thanks Dusty, I have heard good and bad about SMS.  I've heard that their products are very nice and match OEM but I've also heard that just receiving samples sometimes will take weeks or months.  I have been in contact with SMS and need to send them samples of the vehicle's factory fabric.  I thought that with the many restorations that have been undertaken here, someone might have an approximate estimate of cost.  The current owner nor myself have any idea what these materials might run-are we talking about $200 or $2000?  Any more input would be great.

Hello All, I am back at the Kaiser after a brief hiatus working on my '59 Firedome.  The Kaiser's owner would like to continue refurbishing the car (1948 4 door base model) and it needs new upholstery- headliner, door panels, seat covers, etc.  He would like to know what the approximate cost of these materials would be if ordered in closely matched factory colors/materials versus something generic.  If anyone has any input, it would be appreciated, thanks!

General Discussion / Re: No brakes and master cylinder cap removal help
« on: August 08, 2011, 10:15:42 PM »
Thanks for the responses guys!  I have socket extenders, penetrating oil and anti-seize.  I will tackle it tomorrow when there is more light and fewer mice.  A plastic cap sounds like a great idea-the master cylinder appears to be cast, the cap is brass maybe?  It is located waaaaay down on the frame.  I'll let you know how I make out, thanks again!

General Discussion / No brakes and master cylinder cap removal help

 >:( Went to drive the '48 over to the other side of the shop last night and discovered that I had no brakes.  It appears to have a small leak from the passenger side rear wheel cylinder where I didn't tighten the brake line fitting well enough.  I tightened it and was prepared to add fluid and bleed the system, but could not get the cap off the master cylinder.  I have a large socket that fits it but cannot get in there to remove it.  What do you all do??  The master cylinder is new so it shouldn't be stuck, yet... :-[

General Discussion / Repair panels...in 1952?

As I was looking for inner rocker panels, I came across this Popular Science magazine listing repair panels for fenders and rocker panels!  Scroll to page 61 and you'll see what I mean.  I hadn't realized that KF cars rusted out that quickly, now if only it were 1952 again  ;)

Kaiser Forum / Inner Rocker Gauge?
« on: February 13, 2011, 02:53:43 PM »
Hi again everyone!  As some of you might remember, I am working on a '48 Kaiser that had sat for 35+ years.  It is running, has new brakes/lines/master cylinder, etc. but needs a bunch of body work.  I started to dig into it this morning and realized that the inner rockers need replacing as well as the body mount bushings.  I already have new outer rockers for it.  Does anyone know the gauge of the inner rockers?  Is anyone making these?  Thanks in advance for your time.

General Discussion / Re: Radials on original rims?
« on: January 21, 2011, 09:20:22 PM »
Thanks for the replies everyone!  While I would love to get a set of beautiful new white walls, I believe we may have to wait another year to make that purchase-then it will be like the icing on the cake.  Until the new bias plys are bought, be they white or black walls, I should be safe with radials as long as I don't put that stroker kit and blower on it right?  Ha!  Just kidding, we do want to make it as close to original as possible.  Thanks again guys  :)

General Discussion / Radials on original rims?
« on: January 21, 2011, 09:32:32 AM »
Sorry for bringing this up as I know it has been discussed in the past, but we need to get some replacement tires for the '48 as the bias plys that are on it have been there since 1967 (still holding air)!  I have read on here that radials stress the rims and it is recommended to purchase bias plys.  This being said, would the '48 Kaiser Special have come with black or white walls?  Anyone know of an inexpensive brand?  The car also had a tire tube in the trunk, would this have come with the car?  Thanks for the help, we hope to see some of you in Plainfield!
