Thanks for response fellas. I should have updated. Local alt. and S. shop was able to get a new armature and re-built the gen. Works well now and hopefully for  many years to come.

Henry J & Allstate Forum / Re: hub caps & dist. rotors
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:08:17 AM »
My car is a '52 Allstate that has Auto-Lite electrics. I'll get the rotor from NAPA that's intended for the A-L. dist. and see if it fits  better. Thanks for info.
Re. hub caps- mine are like Fid's Vagabond's in size but have no markings of any kind. Now that I know they were made in either stainless or chrome I'm thinking mine are stainless and will give them a light polishing.
P.S. if anyone knows of an allstate center grill medallion out there please let me know. My  car looks sadly incomplete without it. Thank You.

I have the same hubcaps on my '52 as Fid has on Edgar Kaiser's '51. Can't determine if they are chrome-plated or stainless.Leaning toward stainless because they appear somewhat dull even after using chrome polish on them. If they are stainless, would it be advisable to polish them using a polishing wheel and compound on them?
Also, has anyone had a problem with loose-fitting dist.rotors on their 4cyl. engines? I got a new one when eng. was rebuilt(old one had noticeable side to side play in it- figured it was worn after years of service). New one, however, ha s similar play in it. Engine runs fairly well and timing appears O.K. But can't imagine there should be any play in rotor. Is the six cyl. engine rotor different from the four cyl. one? The difference would be in the inner plastic part that fits into slot in distributor shaft. Thanks for help as always.

Thanks for response. Checked taillight mountings and jiggled them a bit and lights came on. Will make sure there is good contact between mounting brackets and body and also check other grounding points. Fuses on top of light switch and in line are right there where Fid said they'd be.
P.S. If anyone knows of an Allstate center grill medallion out there for sale, please let me know.

Need to locate fuse box on my '52 Allstate. Came back from paint shop with major elec. issues. Rt. headlite fizzled out at shop.Brake and tail lights don't work. when I step on brake the dash lights come on. Parking lights seem okay. Left headlight and high beam seem okay. Shop had fenders off and so had to detach wires at the front block. I think I can figure out the routing but want to make sure fuses are okay too. All lights were fine before going to shop. Thanks for help.

Henry J & Allstate Forum / Re: tires
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:16:56 PM »
Info helpful, but still a bit confused. Do I have to break the bank and get original sized specialty tires? Or have people had good results with available modern sized tires? And if so what are the best size options? Again, most driving would be lower speed around-town kind. Thanks forum for your consideration.

All that's standing in the way of getting Allstate on the road is the encroaching Illinois winter and the 50 yr. old Sears tires that it's resting on. With all the driving experience represented on the forum I'm asking what type of tires folks find best suited for H.J./ Allstate.
Am more  interested in ride quality and economy than period correctness. Collector bias plies are expensive, but I like that they are the correct diameter- apprx. 27" and tread width which would  keep steering light. Do bias plies ride more harshly than radials? Modern radials cost half as much. Is there a radial size that would approximate the original size. I'm concerned that radials would be too small in diameter and too wide in tread width. Would a smaller diam. affect final drive ratio?i.e. acceleration and top speed? And would the wider tread affect steering effort noticably?
Having driven up and down the driveway on the old tires (after inflating the two really flat ones) the steering feels pleasantly light. Don't foresee much if any highway driving so would like to keep ride comfortable and steering light around town. Am counting on forum members experience and opinions to help decide which tires to get. Thankyou all.

Fid, I have zero technical abilities on the computer so I'm always amazed at how you resource and send the info and photos you do to folks who need help like me. Your photo shows clearly what I was wondering about even better than the parts diagram. Your extra efforts are deeply appreciated.

That is sort of how I remember it when I took it apart a year plus ago. Putting   it back together it seemed odd to have the thick rubber between the rad. frame and x-member as it makes the frame teeter. Also it appears to raise the frame higher than the fender attachments (I had the right fender completely removed at the same time). I wonder if maybe I should reassemble (attach) the right fender first before putting rubber piece in place. Then I could possibly lift the frontend enough to get it in place rather than lifting each fender  to meet the raised frame. Anyway thanks for clarifying where the rubber piece belongs. That helps a lot and now I can proceed.

Yes, in diagram it's #'s 21-24. 21 is the bolt that holds down the radiator frame and from the looks of it the frame sits directly on crossmember and the squarish rubber spacer and thin metal plate go below crossmember. Can't figure out purpose of rubber piece if it's below x-member. If it were between rad. frame and x-member it could serve as a cushion but would make frame unstable and  higher than it should be to attach to the fenders.
Speaking of fenders- where the two battery stand brackets attach to the inner fender- are they held  in with the regular bolt and clip? or do they have through bolts and nuts? Seems it would be stronger with bolts and nuts. Thank you, John M.

Putting front sheet metal back together on allstate after replacing engine(BTW thanks for everyone's help with that).
Can't remember where the heavy rubber "spacer" goes. It's either between the rad. frame and the cross member or perhaps below crossmember. If it goes between it seems like it would make the rad. frame too wobbly.and too high for the fenders to line up with the rad. frame. Does the rad frame sit directly on the crossmember? If so, then where does rubber spacer and rectangular metal plate go? Don't want to put it in wrong- too many things to take apart again if put in wrong.

Henry J & Allstate Forum / Re: fuel pump
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:09:17 PM »
Gentlemen, both replies very helpful. I should have been clearer about spring. Was referring to smaller inboard spring.(bigger outboard spring is broken- anyone know of a replacement?) The photo really helps show fitted position.
Re: fuel pump. I see tubing that goes from lower chamber of pump to in. manifold. So  I'll connect tubing from mani. to wiper hose when I replace dual act. with single action pump.
    Thanks for your valuable advice.
