Anyone ever hear of this

"Special 51 J that was retagged as a 52 Vagabond and then to a Allstate. 1952 and a half Allstates are very rare making those taillights even rarer since GM loaned them the lamps for that half year model only."

Henry J & Allstate Forum / Re: Bolt pattern for 1951 Henry J?
« on: March 02, 2012, 01:29:13 PM »
The pattern is 5 X 4.5, same as ford/ (common) mopar. Some rims also may require a thin spacer to get past the rivet heads, once the guide pin is ground off. My car had the bolts replaced with regular studs but needed that spacer for the aliminum slot wheel face to sit level against the drum.
I did redrill my pattern to chevy 5 X 4.75 , it's a close fit but there is just enough meat on the hub to do it.

Thanks, regular right handed threads ? The side I will be doing is the left (drivers) although the picture is of the right.
The reason I ask is because I tried removing the right side to change the springs and the broken wrench in the picture is the results. I put that wrench on the big inner nut next to the spindle and used a breaker bar on the outer cap. What I got was the broken wrench and you can also see where it pushed up the metal on the A-arm.

I do have a few reamers out in the garage that I aquired with a tool box purchase, would I match the reamer to the new king pin ?
What about that threaded rod that attaches the A-arm to the spindle, how do you  disassemble it ? I have a mechanic that can do the king pins if I can't but that bushing in that cross bolt has me worried. Is that something that just get driven out or does it unscrew out of that bigger nut ?
I would like this car in a show next weekend if possible so kinda a time crunch.

My king pins are loose and I bought a set from Willow Run, I've had two people say you do not need to ream the bushing and two that say you do. Which are right ?
My other problem I noticed while looking at the king pins is that the lower spindle bushing looks loose also. When I let the jack down it looks like there is slop where the spindle and A arm meet. I see that there is a cross bolt that goes through the lower A arm, then through the spindle and once again through the other side of the A arm.
How do I replace this bushing or is there such a thing ? What does that big nut do that is inside the A arm and next to the spindle, it takes a 1 1/16 or 1 1/4 open end wrench ?

THe Disc conversion you cite will not use a chevy pattern rotor.

Correct, but it will after you drill the hub for a 5 x 4 3/4 chevy bolt pattern. If I had these same rims in a ford 5 X 4 1/2 bolt pattern then I would stick to the conversion the way it was posted. The G.M. rotors are withen a couple thousands on the height and hole diameter in the center of the Concord item.

What do you plan for the front brakes?

I'll be doing a disc brake swap onto it at some point, right now the front brakes work and are good. I found a "how to" on adding front discs to your stock hubs. http://www.henryjcars.com/hjc40/Disk/diskbrakes.html   I also found a comparible chevy bolt pattern rotor to use to switch to 4 3/4 bolt pattern. This way I can use a pair of chevy rims I allready have, that are pretty hard to find.
Depending on how well it stops will determine when that gets done  lol

Henry J & Allstate Forum / Re: Where to find Cross Shaft Nuts ?

I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear on the actual cross shaft. I need one for the cross shaft that holds the A-arms to the upright in the front suspension.

Instaed of starting another topic............
Can someone tell me what the proper length from frame to rear fender lip so I can make some support rods ? These would be the rods going from frame to fender, one each side of the rear tire. thanks
