Kaiser Wiring - Horn Relay - 1953
« on: September 18, 2017, 09:36:27 PM »
Hi Gang...

Interesting question here.  See photo 1 and photo 2 below.  This shows a wire that I think now was cut and appears to have been connected to the horn relay on my '53 Kaiser.  In photo 2 you can see that there is no place to hook the wire and I think the horn relay may have been replaced at some point.  That is, new relays on ebay don't have a 4th connection.

I can say that because....

If you look at the photo of my 1954 Early Special, you can see a different configuration for the same wires.  Since a '54 Special is really a '53 under the hood and elsewhere, I don't know what to think.  So I turn to the Kaiser group for advice.

Does my '53 Dragon have a non-Kaiser horn relay on it?  Does that mean that it should be wired like my '54 Special?  If so, does someone have the correct horn relay with 4 connections on it?

By the way....my horn works on the '53 but sometimes "shocks" me when I press it.  Still....a loose wire should find a home and it might with your help.

Thanks for any advice you can lend....

Hi Geoff,  As I said on the phone, the horn cable coming down the steering column is the one with the male plug, the other three read 'S' ign switch', 'B' battery, 'H' horns'.  The last picture shows the 'right' typical horn relay.

Bob...

Thanks for your confirmation - since I don't have another 53 to check, I was doing my best to compare to my early '54 Special.  If mine was replaced as we both suspect on my '53, then I need to find the correct Horn Relay for 1953 with 4 connection points.  I checked Rudy's catalog but didn't see one.  I checked ebay for Kaiser Horn relay part number 208521 - there weren't any (for sale or completed).

I expanded my search on ebay and did find a few 6 volt Kaiser horn relays that have 4 connections, but these were for years 1947 to 1951.  Here's what I found:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1947-1948-1949-1950-1951-KAISER-FRAZER-HORN-RELAY-KF202205-KF202467-6-VOLT-USA/382209927173?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-6V-Horn-Relay-w-resistor-47-48-Frazer-Kaiser-Switch-202247-202247-MHR-5/311948105617?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

I did a search on interchangeable Horn Relays (need to have 4 connections and not 3) and found only references for 1947 to 1951.  Nothing from 1951-1955 (or just 1953).

The ones I found on ebay look like they would work fine.  But...since no one has referenced these as fitting the 1951-1955 cars, looks are probably deceiving.  I searched our Kaiser boards for info on 208521 and there's nothing.

I'll keep looking for part number 208521 on ebay.  Any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

The 51-55 Kaisers originally came with a four wire horn relay. They were set up this way so the horn would only work with the key on. The three wire relay you have is a common relay used on a lot of six volt cars. It will work fine but the horn will work with the key on or off. The extra  wire should come from the ignition switch and be live only when the key is on. The original relay is nice if you have a sticky horn because it can't come on if the car is off. The four wire relay is not as easy to find as the three wire.

Thanks Rialto - great info to have.  Do you think the relay used on the 1947-1950 will work on a 1953 too?  They also have 4 connectors but the part number is different starting in 1951.

Thanks again...

Mike...

Sorry for the delay in answering - yes I received the e-mail and I will bid.  I'm a bit slow right now to respond.  Hurricane hit my family pretty bad.  I'll e-mail you a bit more tonight.

Thanks again Mike - much appreciated :-)
