Looking For An IMPERFECT Tail Light
« on: February 21, 2019, 11:17:55 PM »
Hi! I’m new to this forum since I just recently bought a ‘51 Frazer. My goal is not to restore it but to make a dependable driver out of it while keeping it mostly original. Unfortunately, the right rear tail lamp has a significant hole in it. I’m hoping to find a used, and ideally far from perfect, replacement tail light lens.  I really don’t care how it looks as long as it doesn’t let water gush in as the present one does. In fact I’d actually welcome one with superficial “character” cracks similar to the one I have. Can anyone possibly help me out? Thanks!  - Brian in Michigan -

These have been very hard to find for many years and someone made reproductions a few years ago.  Read through the older Frazer  comments in the forum and you may find some ideas.  Both sides are interchangeable.  In the meantime you could put some red tape over the hole and keep the water out and keep your light working for safety.  Congratulations on finding a scarce Frazer to enjoy.

Currently on ebay:

However I'll look and see if I have one usable as you described. I have several old used ones on the shelf but will need to confirm no holes or cracks.

You might try what I am doing with a similar damaged Henry J lens.
I took some Gorilla Glue 5 minute epoxy and mixed in a little red food coloring.
Taped off the lens from the outside and used the epoxy to fill in the void.
It's not perfect, but it sealed up the hole, and it almost color matches.

First, I’d like to thank Gordie, Doc and Larryk for their interest in my request and their great feedback. Yes, I saw the NOS tail lights on eBay, but I’m sure there are people with well restored Frazers who would benefit from those much more than mine would, so now there’ll be one less bidder competing for those.

Doc: if you happen to find one on your shelf, please let me know how much you’d want for it. Cracks are just fine since the rest of my Frazer is pretty much original (a fair amount of rust and a lot of faded paint) and I really like the aged (patina) look.

Larryk: I really like your suggestion! Since my Frazer will never be anywhere near being a show vehicle, it sounds like a very viable option if Doc doesn’t have any that are useable.

Here is a picture of a lens I found. If you look at the picture close to the top you may be able to see a small crack across it a couple inches perhaps but it is external only and does not go through to the inside. I checked it and it doesn't seem to readily want to crack any additional amount. How about $20 plus shipping and I will pack it well. If agreeable, you can send me a PM with your full name and address and I 'll send you mine.
