Help
« on: October 14, 2010, 08:38:24 AM »
I have to replace the head gasket on my 48 Kaiser, it looks like I will lose most of the head bolts, how hard will it be to find them? and does any one know where I can get them. Thank you Harry

I believe the Kaiser has bolts as opposed to nuts on the cylinder head.  What I normally do is hit them on the top with a ballpeen hammer a few times before I take them out and I've never wrung one off. Of course, if your car is very old, had a leaky gasket etc. there could be a lot more rust on them.  I'm sure others will chime in here with their suggestions methods.  I do believe the bolts are still available from Dorman - someone on here will know so await some more replies.

Harry: I think there are a lot of used bolts available since there are a lot of engines that aren't rebuildable. You can buy a new gasket through NAPA and other national parts stores. Don't accept the part if it has been bent and creased.

Any reputable hardware store will have the head bolts. Just take one in and make sure to mention that they are "Grade 8" bolts. Grade 8's are hardened and are the correct for the engine. I just bought some for my 54 at Ace Hardware.
