Motor Number

I just acquired a motor #1149872 does any one have an idea of when it was manufactured and possibly what type of Kaiser. I Hope to have it rebuilt for my 55

Where's the dipstick? If it's closer to the starter, then you have a 51-5 engine. If it's closer to the oil fill tube, it's an early engine.

Also, one thing to note, a stick shift engine will not work in a hydramatic car unless you swap crankshafts. The auto trans has an end that sticks out that fits into a hole in the crank. Stick engines do not have that type crank.

Something doesn't sound right on the engine number.  I recall a 1953 model year memo about modified motors built by Detroit Engine Division during a crankshaft shortage.  The memo lists engine numbers for 226 engines that I thought started with "2" instead of 1.  I know this sounds strange, but can you please post pictures of the engine?  If type of water pump, manifolds and a couple other "accessory items" can be seen we can tell a lot more.

I could do better on numbers but my stuff is still in transit and it looks like at least another 2 weeks or more before I will have it unpacked and accessible again.

According to the 1953 issue of Motors Auto Repair, engine number for 1951 Kaisers began with 1100000 or 2000000 and the '52 Deluxe/Manhattan engines began with 1165001 and '53 (with standard trans) began with 2059001 and (Hydramatic) began with 2130001. Based on this, the engine is likely out of a 1951 Kaiser. As Jim points out, it will have to have the correct crankshaft depending on which trans it has. This is from a non-KF publication so keep that in mind. Yes, pictures would help.

Thanks for the info re the motor. Dipstick is closer to the starter motor already at the machine shop so no pictures available . It was a standard tray  plan to convert to automatic will use the internal parts of my 55 .

If my memory serves right the engine # beginning with "1' is a Continental built engine and the engine with a 2 was  Kaiser built.

Where on the motor can one find the motor number? Easy to find if not pulling engine?

The motor number appears in 2 places. It's debossed on a metal plate that's near the dipstick, and it's embossed on the block, at the top front edge of the block, driver's side...just below where it meets the head.
