1952 Henry J rear view mirror question
« on: April 01, 2013, 01:07:11 AM »
The car we just bought does not have a rear view mirror.  I have no idea what they look like and how they mount.  Would someone have a picture of a car with one so I know what it looks like and how it mounts?  Is it on the center piece between the windshields right and left sections? or is it mounted above the window into headliner?  Is it like the 51 mirror that can be flip down?

Thanks,  David

My 52 rear view mirror mounts on the stanless strip between the windshield pieces . The mirror mount arm screwed into the stanless . There are four holes for the screws that hold the inner piece to the outer piece . Just below the top hole is a larger hole the mirror threaded into .

The mirror is a day/ night mirror but i always thought it had been changed as the HJ mirrors i have always seen are not that type but a simple mirror with painted back . My car is apart and the glass removed at this point but will try to get you a picture of what i have .

Please check the various HJ sections in KFOCI HANDBOOK VERSION 4.0 for availability on a HJ Day/Night Mirror.

The '51 Js have the mirror mounted through the headliner as pictured in the previous post.  The '53 Js have the mirror mounted on the center division bar on the windshield. This was done because the '53 Henry J has a dome light, standard on all cars - not optional as  is often stated. I've seen '52 Corsairs with the rear view mirror mounted on the center division bar, but I've seen no factory documentation which indicates this was original on '52s. I would not go so far as to say it was not original as we all know there were a number of "running changes" on the KF line of cars.  The two style mirrors do not interchange - they look similar but the mounting stem is completely different on them. The later style has more rounded corners and if I'm not mistaken, is the same that was used on the '51 Kaiser specials, which was also mounted on the windsheild center trim bar. Day/Night mirror was available as an option on the Henry J as a factory item - I've never seen one. It would be very easy to mount one from a '51 Kaiser Deluxe in a Henry J and I'm sure someone has done it. Edgar Kaiser's Henry J has a day/night mirror in it but it's not a factory one.

Here are the pictures of the mirror from my HJ . the last one shows the mounting hole for the mirror . It shows the upper trim mounting hole , then the mirror hole then another trim hole .

My car already has the headliner installed.  Feeling around at the top center of the window, I can feel a hole about 3/8 in size under the material.  Did the mirror just bolt into the roof frame?  I guess I will just have to pull the headliner back from the top of window and take a look
