What is the best way to bench-test a speedometer?

My guess is that you will be spinning counter clockwise when looking at the back of the speedometer, since that is the direction the needle turns. But someone who has bench tested one before will need to confirm.

I would think that if I spun it in the wrong direction, something will be FUBAR

You can turn it with your fingers fast enough to see the needle move.  If it doesn't move you are probably turning it backwards.

The cable spins counter clockwise and directly drives the drum. There is no reduction at the cable end.
