51 kaiser coolant in base
« on: December 08, 2009, 03:30:14 PM »
Installed a new head gasket w/ liberal amounts of permatex. Still got coolant in the base. Took the head off again, turned it over and filled it with water. Found water running out the hole that the dist. shaft runs through. That passage has rusted through to the water jacket. Anyone have a usable head they would sell?

Well, that is one situation that I will have to file away for reference! Kudos for figuring out where your leak was.
Usually leaks due to head problems are a warped head or a crack in the area between the combustion chambers.

This seems like a time to re account this story. Ben Walker bought 2 Kaisers in Greenville, TX. One was out on the shores of Lake Towakoni while the other was in a shop in Downtown Greenville. We rebuilt the engine from the car out by the lake and put it in Ben's black 51 4dr. The engine from the car downtown sat around for about 1 year and then I asked if I could try it in my 56 Willys station wagon. Well, I tried to start this other engine and sprayed a bunch of ether down the carb. Eventually it fired and shot flame out the water pump! The head was warped enough that fuel mixture got in the coolant jacket and when a spark plug fired, it ignited the mixture in the cooling jacket. It was a good thing I didn't have a radiator installed! I got the head trued and put on a new head gasket, but it needed a valve job as well.

Here's a Kaiser head, 226 I believe.  Price is right if it is a good head..$25.

This head is for a 161 engine that is used in a 6 cylinder Henry J.

After looking at the picture again, it may be off of a 4 cylinder Henry J.

It is a 134 CID four cylinder Henry J head. The telltale is it is the only KF engine with a triangular bolt pattern for the water outlet (thermostat housing).

Yep, I saw the firing order on the head too late.  I didn't realize that Kaiser made other "Supersonic" engines than the 226...
