Supersonic L-134 Carburetor
« on: April 13, 2008, 03:21:33 PM »
I have a four cylinder, supersonic, L-head engine and I need a carburetor.  I purchased a Solex for a L-head Willys that I thought would be the same, but they are not.  The intake manifold on the Supersonic requires a larger one barrel.  Is there a recommended replacement carburetor?  Thanks.

The carburetor used on the 134 CID L4 was Carter YF 820S, 820SA or 820SB.  The 134 was produced by Willys and used in many Jeeps for years before and years after the Henry J was produced. I believe it is still available through some of the Jeep outlets.  Northstar Willys in Dassel, MN may have one. Their website is http://www.northstarwillys.com
I believe there is one on ebay right now too. See
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1948-JEEP-KAISER-CARTER-CARBURETOR-WITH-ORIGINAL-BOX_W0QQitemZ260229794954QQcmdZViewItem

Check it out. If you don't find one there, post on here as there KF Parts vendors I know that may them too.

I went to the Northstar Willys website and it appears that a Carter WO fits the L-Head, as their listing states WO for 2A / 3A, and one other model I am not familiar with.  The YF is listed for CJ3B, CJ5 and others. These are F-Head models of engine.  Are you sure about your info?  Thanks for your interest.  R.

The info on the YF Carburetors was taken right off the A.E.A Henry J tune up sheet for the 1951 four cylinder model. I just now pulled out the Henry J Service Standard guide which was published by Kaiser-Frazer. Page 9 lists carburetor for the four cylinder as "Down Draft, Single, Carter 820S, SA or SB."  The thing to keep in mind if you're comparing it to one that was removed is that these cars/engines are 50+ years old and you can't be certain that things have not already been replaced. In fact, it is likely they have been replaced and often times people were forced to use what they could find instead of what was specified in the factory literature. Page 27 of the factory Henry J parts manual also lists the carburetor as "Carter YF820S, 820SA, or 820SB." I don't know for sure, but it is certainly possible that the F-head and L-head used the same carb. I checked the 1955 edition of "Motors Auto Repair" and it lists same for 4 cyl Henry J. It also lists "YF" types for all Willys vehicles but it does not distinguish between L-head and F-head so I'd say there's a good possibility that it's the same.  I also checked Rudy's KF Parts catalog which lists simply "YF" but he sells them and knows the parts/cars quite well. You may want to call him. His number is "Rudy's KF Parts" phone 1-760-789-3608.  Good luck and let us know what you find.

I have a 1950 Willys engine in my barn.  If you place a straight edge across the carb mounting studs it is parellel to the cylinder head.  The supersonic I am rebuilding and one additional one in my barn, but would have the straight edge perpendicular to the cylinder head.  Also, the opening for fuel is 1/8" larger and studs spaced further apart on both Supersonics versus the Willys engine.  I am wondering about the throttle shaft orientation of the WO versus the YF.  Or, wonder if the linkage on the Kaiser application is more similar to the F head configuration versus the Willys Jeep L -head configuration.

Here's a picture of one in a 20,000 mile Henry J. See if this helps. I'm not familiar with the F-heads at all so perhaps the photo will shed some light.  Let me know, we'll keep trying till we figure it out.

Yes, this looks like what I have.  What does your throttle linkage look like?  Any chance of photos there?

The car in the photo is not mine and is long gone. I do know a guy who lives not too far from me that has a 4 cyl and he'll probably let me take a photo. I also know there is a drawing of the throttle linkeage in the Henry J parts book. I won't be home till this weekend so when I get home I'll scan that pic and post it.

If you wouldn't mind scanning the drawing / photo of the linkage, I sure would appreciate it.  In the under hood photo, it almost looks like there is a cable running to the carburetor, but maybe that is the choke cable.

Here's the drawing from the HJ Parts Book. It appears there is an L shaped piece for metal bolted to the firewall, right where the throttle rod from the gas pedal comes through (22 in the diagram which includes the pin that attaches it to the bellcrank). There is also a bracket of some type mounted on the manifold or the head to anker the rest of the linkage. It's part of number 1 in the diagram, which the bolts and washers 25 and 26 pass through.  Also, the cable in that photo is the choke cable - all Henry Js had manual chokes.

Good deal. If this is not adequate, let me know an I'll call my friend who has the 4 cyl J and see if he's gotten it out from storage yet. I can go to his place and take some photos if need be.
Best of luck!

Thanks for posting the engine photo! I have been trying to find some Henry J engine photos but it seems like they all have a V-8 engine :)  If you have more photos I'd like to see them.

Thanks,
Bob W

There are a lot of Henry  J engine shots on this site - http://www.autoclubs.ca/gallery/2007/index.html
Scroll down to July 2 through July 5 which were taken at the KFOC National last summer. Some 4 cyl and some 6 cyl J engines as well as many Kaiser and Frazer photos.  Enjoy.
