Got my Aero to run again !! It stalled out  a year or so ago....and lost all compression . I had no idea that the cam gear was a fiber gear...New gear....and it started right up :) My brother had been drooling to make it a rod....he will have to wait....still got some life left in her as a stocker :)

Just the opposite...I'm in the UP of Michigan on Lake Superior. I was trying to get ready for winter...so I finally made the time to work on the Willys so I didn't have to push it around by hand .Had our first snow yesterday..."timing " is everything :)

Just to tack onto your original post. I remember rebuilding a 161 with my dad in the early 70s and I remember that was the first time I saw a fiber timing gear. In the late 80s, one day I was out driving my J and it just quit for no apparent reason. I checked the fuel, none being pumped. I checked for spark, none. I knew there was one common component which ran both the distributor and fuel pump and that was the camshaft. The engine turned over with starter just fine so I knew the crankshaft was turning. It told me the crank turns but the cam doesn't. I remembered that fiber timing gear and how I couldn't believe it would turn the cam. So... I pulled the distributor cap and turned the engine over and I noticed the rotor was not turning. I knew there was only one thing that could produce this set of symptoms! Upon pulling the front cover off the engine it was quite obvious! At that time, the gear was $6.50 at NAPA.
In all my years of owning this car, that was the only time I ever had to walk because of it. I should note that those fiber gears are quite reliable for the most part. Yours is the only other one I've heard about in all my years in the hobby so they have a pretty good track record.

On the way to the KF National in York PA years ago, the gear stipped on a friend's 50W Jeepster. I diagnosed the issue as a stripped gear when I pulled the distributor cap and noticed that the rotor didn't turn when the engine was cranked over. Once the gear was replaced, all was well.

The 161 gear is getting tough to find. The 134 gear is easily mistaken as the same, but they do not interchange.

In my case , the rotor was turning. The engine had been running and just quit....when I tried to restart, there was no compression. When I checked the timing against the timing mark, the rotor was on# 5 instead of # 1. When I got the cover off, 4 teeth had fallen apart.The gear is hard to find ,and not cheap anymore ,$119. Got it from Kaiser Willys in SC. The first one lasted 58 years , so I figure it should outlast me :)

Time to do for the Willys engines as was done for the Studebaker engines--reproduce the fibre gear in aluminum

Didn't they continue to make this engine in South America ? Might be cheaper to get it from there ...

I see those 161 timing gears on ebay all the time. Usually sell for $25 - $40. I grabbed up a number of them. The one for the 161 has 48 teeth, the 134 has more, I don't remember how many.
