timing on a 1952 manhattan 226

can anyone tell me how to set timing on a 226.I'm almost done with the rebuild but cant find out how to set timing .also what would the factor engine color be on this engine

By 'Setting the timing' do you mean getting the valves/pistons timed?  I believe the 226 is different in that you line up  the marks on the gears with the number 6 piston up on compression as opposed to number 1 as many other engines.  From then on it's straight forward like any other car - disconnect the vac advance, put the timing light on #1 spark plug, make the chalk mark in the appropriate number on the pulley and rotate the distributor till it fires there.

There are no gears on the 226; it uses a timing chain.

Actually, there are marks on the gears...but you'd have to remove the chain cover to see them.

To properly time, you'll want the #1 piston to be on its compression stroke with the distributor rotor pointing at the #1 plug wire. The optimum timing is 4 degrees before top dead center.

The timing mark is on the harmonic balancer and is referenced by a pointer.

I'm not sure what good a chain would do if there were no gears to drive it.

Bryan I'm confident anyone who is finishing a rebuild as you are knows the 226 CID has a chain. But the marks are on the gears and that's what I was referring to.

That manual even says "gear" and refers to the marks on the gear.  So to be more clear, I was asking if you had lined up the marks yet. It sounds like have. Let us know if your question has not been answered and we'll keep trying.

yes it does have a chain and thanks for the reply
