161 exhaust manifold studs
« on: March 13, 2016, 05:30:53 PM »
I started tearing down a spare 161 and noticed the front 2 exhaust manifold studs were larger(not longer) than the rest. I'm assuming they were drilled out and replaced sometime after snapping off in its past...so my questions are:

1) Should I be concerned of the upsize? There appears to be enough metal there to do so?  (I'm use to playing with Y-blocks, so learning from the spare)

2) Is it recommended to upsize the others? They will need to be replaced too when it eventual goes to the engine shop to get checked.

Thanks in advance for the assist as I'm awaiting some additional manuals.
Regards,
Noah

For some reason, the exhaust manifold studs are prone to snapping off on the 161 block. As long as the work was done right, there's nothing to be concerned about. I wouldn't worry about the others - if the nuts come off without issue, then you're OK with reusing everything.

Thank you! I thought I remember the old man saying that about them. There was another broken stud and I soaked the others everyday for 2 weeks to get the nuts off. The threads are pretty well corroded, so I figured it would be good to replace them all rather than try my luck and have to replace anything later.
