Got my 53 deluxe resprayed and distributor problem
« on: April 24, 2018, 12:05:22 PM »
Hey everyone, its been a fair while since I posted on here, I have a Kaiser 1953 Deluxe automatic, and I live in London, England.

I had it resprayed red (it was faded blue with the remnants of a cheap metallic blue respray on top!).

I am getting her fixed up gradually. I have a problem - the guy at the garage trying to tune her up says that a part that the distributor mounts onto is broekn meaning that he cannot tune it properly (its running a like a pig now!).

Here is a photo of the faulty bit:

Can anyone tell me what this is please? And if and where I might get a replacement for it?

Thanks in advance!

Giles

That is actually 2 bits appearing frozen together. The thingy with the clamp is the distributor advance arm, which attaches to the base of the distributor. The lower section is the distributor mount, which bolts onto the head and to which the advance arm attaches. The combination determines the ignition timing, and is therefore a big deal.

The mounts had a tendancy to break where the bolt hole for the head is, and might be hard to find as a result. The advance arms are fairly common. Need to be careful in getting one for a 52 or 3 Delco distributor, as the 51's tend to be autolite and don't interchange. There is  a fix for broken mounts, but from your pic it may be too late.

Hi,

I have the exact same issue on my 52' Manhattan. Was there other vehicles using the same part as the Delco distributor was pretty common?

I can't get a response from Duane.  Any other suggestions of how to reach him?

I have an extra distributor base that will fit the Delco equipped cars. Private Message (PM) me if you're still interested and we can work out the shipping details.

Thanks for all the useful replies. However, the guy at the garage has made up something himself to fix the distributor tightly in place!

All he has to do now is bleed the brakes, and I can have her back ready for me to finish off the interior and have some fun over this summer :-)

John Haller in Mpls showed a trick 50 some years ago. Because of flaws in the casting of the mounting bracket, it was common for the bracket to break where the hold down bolt was. He would take a piece of emery cloth and wrap it around a piece of 1 x 3 wood and do a lite sanding on the bottom of the bracket. Then he would put it a piece of glass to make sure it was truly flat. After I did this on my '51, no more breaks !

Seems John Haller knew many tricks on these old cars. Those are the things we often miss now a-days. John was quite a guy. I'll keep this one in my memory. Makes sense. Thanks boatingbill

The mechanic is telling that my carburettor is in bad shape.

What is the situation with getting a replacement, does anyone know? Can you buy "new old stock"? Or reconditioned ones? I could exchange my old one for refurbishment if there is a company doing this?

If your mechanic can't rebuild it, call Benchwick Carburetor Co. in Youngstown, Ohio, 330.782.3767. Harry will fix you up!
