Rear Axle Shim!!!
« on: September 12, 2019, 08:30:02 PM »
I need a few rear axle shims.  The person who rebuilt my Darrin Rear End did not have any extras.  I had an extra rear end that did not have the correct size shims to give me the .001" - .006" clearance the rear axles need to operate correctly.  Either there is no clearance (that's what I have now) or too much - .020".   I believe I would need a .005" shim to put the axle in the right place, however, I don't know.  I have 2 - .005" shims and many .030" shims with nothing in between.   Can anyone out there help???

I have a Salsbury Rear end which is very close to a Dana (See the picture).

I meant to add that the rear end should be the same as a Henry J, and similar to the full size cars, that's why I posted it here instead of the Darrin category!

Since there were no hits on shims, I went on-line and purchased a plastic shim sheet 10" x 20" that was .004".  It was only $4.95!!  I cut off a piece, punched holes and used a scissors to remove the excess.   Installed the shim and it gave me .003" clearance, right where I wanted it within the specs (.001" - .006").  Another item crossed off the very long list!!!  The rear end is mounted in place and the brakes are going on, when I can find the clips holding the emergency brake cables in the backing plate.
