Brake master cylinder question...
« on: September 03, 2020, 05:58:48 PM »
So, Ebay tells me this master cylinder is appropriate for a 51 Kaiser Deluxe, but we all know Ebay lies.  :)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Brake-Master-Cylinder-Professional-Grade-MC2796/283848383378?fits=Year%3A1951%7CMake%3AKaiser&epid=76763040&hash=item4216ae9b92:g:3egAAOSwglJeTG9D

Can anyone tell me if this is an adequate substitute for original?  Great price given some I've looked at...

Thanks guys!

Konrad you are wise for checking. That is not a master cylinder for a '51 Kaiser.  Looks like Henry J which is the same as 1947-50 Kaiser I believe.

If you're looking to replace one on your '51 Kaiser,  you can actually rebuild it without even taking it off the car. I rebuilt the one on my '51 Special a few years ago with it on the car.  Not that difficult.
I think you said your car is a Hydramatic so it may be easier to replace on that one. Mine a is a three speed with OD and the clutch cross shaft has to be removed in order to replace it so for me it's good that it can be rebuilt without removing it!

Many thanks Fid!

Mine is fine at the moment, but I'm looking to acquire what parts I can for the future given my beastie is 70 years old and likely anything is subject to fail at a moment's notice.  :)

Within those parameters, I also do not want to lay out funds for parts that won't work on my car...so again my thanks for your knowledge and input.  It's a shame that many ebay sellers play fast and loose with their compatibility charts, though I'm sure it helps them sell more parts, regardless if they are correct for the car ordered for.  Nevertheless, I shall continue to seek parts, compare with what I know and what limited interchange lists I have, and when uncertain, ask for a friendly answer here to my queries, as you have so kindly provided.

Hopefully one day I can return the favor for new members that come on board.

New master cylinders are still available for the 51-55 Kaiser.  Dorman #M36067 and Wagner #MC36313.

The 51-55 Kaiser master cylinder is the same as Ford used on their 49-51 cars. Try the Ford vendors if you are looking for parts. I would also try Rock Auto.

That is correct.  And they are available via the Mac's Catalog and/or website.
That's where I got the rebuild kit for mine.

Like the 1949-51 Ford, the 1951-55 Kaiser needs the hole in the casting for the clutch shaft to run through from pedal to clutch.
