54-55 226 engine - same as 55 willys 226 ?
« on: September 19, 2010, 01:53:22 PM »
I have been looking for a 54-55 226 block , the beefed up style for use with the supercharger. I have a 55 willys engine from a 4dr sedan  i'm parting out. I have not opened it up but does anyone know if they used the old style block or the newer style in these cars ?   It says willys superhurricane on the head so i think it's original to the car ,have not checked for numbers yet.

The block and head are the same between the W and K engines. Hydramatic and stick shift cranks differ so both need to be the same transmission type to be a direct fit. You'll have to use the linkage from the Kaiser engine and the oil pan and oil pump screen position may differ...you'll want to compare. There may also be some small odds and ends that need swapped too.

In addition, I believe that the main bearings are heavier in the K 226 to handle the S/C.

The Super Hurricane is correct when the 226 is installed in a W car.

Also the valve rotators required for the S/C engines, to help prevent the valves from burning

Thanks for the information, just thought since they were both being produced at the same plant by 54-55 ?? that they may have used kaiser blocks. While disassembling this 55 willys i sure have found a lot of other kaiser parts they used.

Heads are different castings between Kaiser and Willys 226's.  Mechanically and from an operations standpoint they are, but Kaiser car heads for 1954-55 have "Kaiser 226" on them, while Willys heads have "Super Hurricane" on them.

Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, but I 'think' there was something different about the oil rings also, as well as the valve rotators, again due to the higher pressure with a S/C engine.

I recently sold a "Super Huricane" head that we had used on a '51 Kaiser till we could find a "Kaiser Supersonic" head for it. I don't remember what I got for it on ebay or who bought it. It was a nice one.
