What now
« on: January 30, 2011, 04:49:43 PM »
Well the old 48 has done it to me again, after spending a large part of the summer rebuilding universals all new gaskets and seals, new clutch, dist.carb, water pump, thermostat housing harmonic balancer, I thought I replace  the head gasket adj and grind the valves and be done at last, well after looking at the top of the block there is a crack running from the vavle seat to the cylinder and atiny bit down the wall, I just don't know, the joy of old car's, it never gave any sing of trouble.

That is unfortunate, but common with most flatheads, not just the 226. A lot of rebuilt blocks have a sleeved cylinder to correct this problem.

If the crack extends next to and below the valve seat in to the water jacket don't waste money on a sleeve as it will suck water at the intake valve or blow exaust into the water jacket at the exaust valve.

Thinking  of getting a rebuilt, or selling it, it's a nice looking car with a great inside, don't know if I could get anything for it
