'54 Glove box and light
« on: February 16, 2011, 01:01:03 PM »
My cardboard glove box was hanging by two bottom screws and sagging inward.  The top and side edges are so tattered that they cannot be fastened to the dash.  I have a light switch in there, but no light, the wire runs to a junction.  I see in the wiring diagram, the wire from the junction should go to the light, and then to the switch.  Does anyone have a photo or a description of where the light should be?  I assume on the top somewhere.  Should I make a new cardboard box, or perhaps it should be metal?  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Reproduction glove boxes are available from a vendor with the club. If you're not a member, join and you'll get a publication monthly with classified ads.

I'll take a look at my 54 and see how things are set up regarding the light and advise.

Is the light and socket like the front door courtesy light that is under the dash? Or a little one?

On my 53 Dragon, at least, it's a little one.  But I don't know about the 54s.

The socket is the small one and it takes a number 55 lamp.

Well, DOH!  I pulled the light switch out (for the first time) and found the light socket is at the other end!  I thought it was a separate device with additional wiring!  Since I recently removed the opaque glass domes from the speedometer and the lighting is now very bright there, I "borrowed" the center bulb and put it in the glove box socket and it works fine.  Now I just need to rebuild the glove box itself.  Thanks, everyone!

I just received my "new" glove box from Terry Z and it looks great with all the tabs, cutouts and reinforced screw holes.  Maybe I can change it out when it is cooler in the garage tonight!  Awesome!
