M38A1 military jeeps are a bit past the scope of this forum.  You may want to contact websites dealing with military vehicles or specific to the Jeeps (CJ, DJ, M38A1, MA, MB, etc).

Mine had a tag on the frame cross member behind the front bumper. It was a 1943.

The M38 had two tags, one on the firewall and another on the body at one of the rear wheel openings. The tag mounted on the front frame horn by the bumper was used with the CJ2, CJ2A and CJ3A while the CJ3B had just the firewall tag. On some CJ3A units, they also stamped the number into the frame on the passenger side just ahead of the body tub.

Dont mean to argue, I am no authority on jeeps, all I know mine was a military it had the black out lights, gas fill under the seat, gun mount built in the frame, and it had a tag behind the bumper that called it a "scout car".
