I've read this forum's entries for the thermostat, but I'm still puzzled.  For my '53 Henry J, I bought the thermostat #15356 from Auto Zone.  But comparing it to the existing one, it's not even close in appearance.  The one from the car is about 2" in diameter and about 2" tall.  On the bottom is the number F-218K-304.  In the center is imprinted: HRD 8-50.  The Auto Zone one  is the right diameter, but MUCH shorter.  Is this indeed the right one?

  Thermoststs vary in appearence. The old bellows type were much bigger than the modern ones.

As long as the seat dia is the same then you are good to go. What opening temp did you get?

I got the one that opens at 160 degrees.

This is what holds it in place in the elbow so the coolant can be controlled.  If you need one, this same part also fits the '37-'54 Pontiac 6 & 8. You may find one listed under those cars for less.
