Sharing / Info Sheet
« on: November 10, 2013, 02:47:31 PM »
This morning, wife and kids sent me out to get donuts.  I took our 52 Henry J to donut shop 6 blocks away and parked it in front on Whittier Blvd.   I came home a hour later because of all the attention the car got.  It's great showing the car and driving it, but get tired repeating myself of what it is to those less fortunate to know about our great cars.  I decided I am going to write it up and have a little info sheet in back window.  That way people can read about it, especially if I am not nearby.
Before I write something, Has anyone done a brief write up to show with your car telling history of the Henry J?  You able post a picture of it or share somehow?
It's great talking to car guys, but when it comes to non car guys asking what is it, I can point and tell them to read about it, then ask questions.  :)

Here is what I present at the shows/cruise-ins that I go to.
It may look ragged but it has been weathered for 6 years.
It measures 2'x3'.

Made by Kinkos in 2 days for $90.

I have a similar one for my Darrin.

Anticipating a HJ in our future, I did a brief history/spec sheet (1 sheet, 8 1/2 x 11) for the window; it was written as if the car was talking to you (Hi, I'm a 1951 Henry J.  I was built by....)

Knew a guy that did this for a rare antique tractor after he lost his voice from talking about it at a show. Start out with a "window sticker" then add to it per questions you keep getting.

Ok, Henry J came with two interior lower dash colors, brown and gray.  I can't find it in the handbook.  I am looking for the name of the gray.   Is it Willow gray?

Hi Dave, I've heard the name of the gray color too but I don't recall what it is. I don't think it's Willow gray but I don't know for sure, if I find it I'll let you know. As far as the lower dash of the Henry J being either brown or gray - every '51 J I ever saw which had all vinyl upholstery had the lower dash (column and molding) painted to match the color of the car. That was numerous examples.  I never took the time to note the I.P. designation on the data tag to see if that confirms it but that's been my personal observation.  The low-mileage J Steve Carey owns is like that. There is fellow who lives close to me that has one with all Cape Verde green vinyl and it's like that.  There were two for sale right near me back in the early 2000s. Both were satin blue with all brown vinyl upholstery and both had the color matched lower dash. I've no factory documentation which mentions this but  every case I've seen was that way.

To this point I have no list issued by the factory of what the IP numbers on the firewall tag refer to for colors; what I list in the General Information Section (reading Body Tags) came out of KFOCI HANDBOOK Version 3.0.

Maybe this should be a separate thread.  I did find the picture I took of the tag of the all cape verde green vinyl J near me and there is no "I.P." column on it so perhaps that was something only the later cars had.  See attached pictures.  Of course the shift lever appears to be gray and there are many other alterations on the car but it does seem unlikely that someone would've painted the steering column and moulding.  And as I mentioned, it's consistent with other "all vinyl" examples I've seen.

I should point out, because it's not easy to see in the pictures, the exterior of the car has clearly been repainted in a non-KF color. The paint code indicates Ceramic Green and that's the color of the dash and inside and it appears original when you look at it - it is not the more aqua colored hue that's on the exterior.
Maybe I'll hunt down all the pictures I have of the all vinyl examples and start another thread.

IP headers started on 1952 later series cars; if I read this correctly your tag is for a 1951 Deluxe (6 cyl) and would not have IP information.

Thanks Jack. That makes sense then as my '53 J does have the "IP" column. I don't recall ever finding out what that meant for sure as far as the numbers go. I did start a new thread on the color coordinated column and molding I'd encountered. Any info on that would be appreciated.
