A red one makes occasional appearances at our local cruise nite. It's quite a car!

Henry J Spark Plugs!
« Reply #3 on: January 30, 2014, 11:52:08 PM »
Can anyone tell me a eazy way to remove the spark plugs in my 52 Henry J? I have a 6cyl.motor.
I got 3 of the 6 out OK.The other 3 are very tight,I have tried to pull on them with no turning.I have tried putting Marvel oil on them.I would hate breaking one off in the head.
Any help on the one would be helpful!
Thank
Larry

Usually, applying heat helps loosen stuck items, however, I'd caution against using too much here because of the risk of cracking the head. It has hollow passages for water circulation and the relatively thin casting could crack. Your best bet is to continue with plenty of penetrant and pressure. Slow and steady will win the race!

If it does come down to it, you may have to remove the head if the plugs just won't budge. Fortunately, the HJ engine uses nuts to hold the head in place and the risk of snapping off a stud is very minor. Just use lots of lube on each one along with a wire brush to dress the threads.

If this is a running engine try when it is hot might help a little.
