At the PNW Spring Meet, May 2011 at DeGoede Plant Farm, near Mossy Rock, Washington.  Not the same car though.

Whats the purpose of the heater shut off valve? Just to bypass the heater core during the summer or is there another purpose?  My car has one that is just stuck open.

You got it Dave.  The Henry J was a cost cutter and they didn't load it down with luxuries like a heater valve you could turn on/off from inside the car!  You open it in the winter, then open the passenger side air vent so air can flow through the heater core and warm the inside of the car.  The valve is supposed to be mounted at the rear of the cylinder head but in order to install the original type value, you had to remove a head bolt and a stud in order to thread it in.  An owner of that car likely didn't want to do that and mounted it in the water pump outlet instead.
There is another way... and I've done it on mine.  I'm not sure if I'd loose points for it, I don't think I did at Auburn, but NAPA has a valve that has a 45 degree spout on it which you can thread in without hitting the adjacent head bolt. Works fine and looks correct too, just won't match the one pictured in the parts book. I can't find the NAPA part number for it right now but I think it's still available.

That is a very early 51. Notice the bent tubing column support and the fixed not opening vent window.Throw in the no trunk and no glove compartment and it is most unusual.

its what my car is

The paint chip below shows the only paint Codes -  390 / 550 / 569
These are the only K-F Codes that point at Aloha Green in my database
http://circlekf.com/kfcars/colors.htm
This page will let you see all the codes and lots of related documentation about the different Colors

You will find a translation of paint code to paint color if you look up your particular vehicle type (K514, K522, etc) in the KFOCI HANDBOOK CD Version 5.0 which went out to all members (at that time) in the fall, and since then new members got it as part of their new member packet.  Version 4.0 the earlier one on CD was not changed in this regard when the update came out.

Old thread but I thought I'd add that I found the NAPA number for the heater valve with the 45 degree offset spout. It's NAPA 6601418, listed on their site for $29 so it's a bit more expensive but not having to remove a head bolt stud to mount it is worth a few dollars to me! I did not receive a deduction at Auburn for having one on my car. Also, once you attach he hose and route it, it is hardly noticeable that it's different.  Here's the listing for it (picture's up-side-down for some reason)

Alan Yhomas' HJ had a neat heater hose dirivative. Alan located a hose with a tight 90 degree turn on the end and that end he placed on the inlet to the heater. Really neat. I'm looking for a picture of it. I have it some where in the Dell swamp(my computer).

Does not show it all that well.

The second shot is Irv's 51,before he got the corectness religion, with a dash cable operated heater control valve.
