Fuel pump advice neeeded

I am about to change out the fuel pump on my 6 cyl J. I have not done this in a long time. It looks like the tank is higher than the pump. Will I get gas flow when I disconnect the line from the pump. Should I drain the pump first? Any other suggestions?

Hi Jim,  when I was doing some engine work on my '52 J ten years ago, I had disconnected the neoprene hose from the fuel pump and it seemed OK.  About 3am the next morning my wife woke me up to tell me she smelled gas real bad and so did I. It had all leaked out and I had to go out the garage at 3am and hose everything down. Not only a dangerous mess but a lot of expensive gasoline lost. I don't remember what I did to cap it off. If you're just swapping the pump out, not big deal but if you're going have the pump off it for a while you'll want to cap it somehow.

I use a bolt with an smooth shank(cut off threads) and push it all the way in and clamp it tight. Yes I would change all the rubber hoses as the new gas deteriorates the old rubber.

  For years I have used golf tees as a temporary plug for different hoses.

I've done the golf tee thing too but this was the metal line and has sharp angle so I couldn't get a golf tee down the line. That usually works well.

Thats  when you get in that box of fittings with the hole soldered shut.

I would take a short piece of hose and block off one end and then clamp the hose over the line.
