Rear Main Seal rubbers - up or down?
« on: September 10, 2009, 02:58:11 PM »
I'm rebuilding a '51 Henry J 4 cylinder, have a full bearing and seal kit.  Got the new ropes in the block and rear main cap, manual says to insert the rubber pegs in the hole formed on the edge of the cap and block and leave it sticking out a quarter inch for the oil pan to compress it.  But the pegs are a few thousandths smaller in diameter on one half than they are on the other half.

So, does the smaller end go into the block or towards the oil pan?

thanks in advance
Dave (restoring Tom's '51 Henry J that has been his or his uncle's since NEW)

I've never seen this arrangement. All the ones I've seen have been same diameter on both ends. You may have gotten a defective set. One place you can get one is www.northstarwillys.com
