motor oil capacity
« on: September 14, 2015, 03:39:20 PM »
I recently bought a 1954 Kaiser Early Special. The dip stick is wrong for the motor. It has a FORD logo on it and does not have a stopping point on the shaft. I need to know the correct amount of oil for this motor. It does have  a Fram by pass oil filter on it and I have not purchased any literature on this car. Any help is appreciated

The owner's manual for my '51 Kaiser Special (which should be the same specs as a '54 early Special) lists crankcase capacity as "5 Quarts."  As a rule of thumb, if the car has a by pass filter, that's another half quart but I've heard others on this forum state it's a full quart. You can be pretty safe with 5 and half. You should be able to put 5 quarts in the oil fill spout, then remove the cover on the filter and pour in enough to fill the canister - that should do it. Of course, you have to drain the canister first and this is assuming there is a filter in the canister!

Thanks for the information. I will try the 5 and 1/2 quarts.

And, of course, mark your current dipstick for the correct level after you know you have the correct amount of oil in the crankcase.

Better yet, why not get the right dipstick?
