Darrin color Chips
« on: January 23, 2017, 04:01:05 PM »
Greetings...I have an odd question. Were color charts for the Darrin offered to autoparts/paint suppliers? I worked for an Auto parts store since high school and I was the mixer and we keep our manuals...I've looked through all of them but no Darrin colors are ever listed (even looked through the old micro fiche).  I also never see them on any of the charts on E-vil-Bay. I have seen postings in the old bulletins for the formulas, but thought the chart would be nice to have in my fledgling collection haven't seen anything...do they exist?
Regards,
Noah

Sample chips were made by an owner decades ago and distributed around.

At least Pine Tint is listed in the color books and Willys offered a bright red called President Red in 1955.  I'm not sure if it is the same red used for the Darrins.  Kaiser offered two different yellow's in 1951 and 1952 and one in 1955 but it almost an orange.

I do not believe that the chips were in a JOBERS chart.

A service bulletin was issued that detailed the colors used on a Darrin but color chips themselves were not included.

From experience I know that Ford's Wimbledon White is a near exact match to the Champagne used on the Darrin.

Thanks
Lee
If anyone is looking for the Darrin green Check out PPG #47616 Deltron Pond Green.
When I did the yellow it was a special mix trial and error.

I had correct color chip charts from several companies while searching for a match on my Aero. The only one useful to anyone was Ditzler chip numbers (pittsburg paint & glass), PPG. The only company that nailed my color was http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/ Not only that, Jimmy also absolutely nailed my dash colors with some info that nobody had, even here.
Choices are lacquer, enamel, acrylic, PPG in base clear and their house brand Restoration base clear, which is a good value and laid down beautiful.

Even if you're not paint shopping, the vid down the page on that link is interesting to watch.

Yes, that is the Bulletin i located in my dad's files...Its dated Feb of '54...Although it clearly states only pine tint was available from the factory and all others from Rinshed-Mason, I was hoping it moved to the factory, but I'm guessing they were experiencing the financial problems to worry about that.  Conversion it is...Thank you all for the wealth of knowledge. Taking it all in:-)
