51 6 cylinder Henry J up for auction on Ebay...
« on: February 21, 2020, 10:57:18 PM »
Wish I had the means at the moment, as this appears to be a very nice example...frame off restoration in 2002.

Current bid as of posting this is $10,100, but reserve not met yet, and of course, no idea what the reserve is...but perhaps one of our members who has been looking for such a car will be interested?

Car is in PA, per the auction info...

This car belongs to a club member. He had it at the Hershey AACA meet this past fall and several of us looked it over very closely. It's an early production car and one of the tell-tales, beyond the low serial number, is the steering column support. Later units were a pot metal design.

Any guess why the heater supply hose from the head to the pump is short circuited?Leaking heater core?

Looking at the firewall it appears to be a heater delete car.  But in that case the ports should just be plugged.

I believe that's the car that sold at Barrett Jackson for around 30K back in '05 which was quite an anomaly.  It's a nice car make no mistake about that. I saw it at Sweetwater when I stopped by one afternoon.  It's an early one with the open steering column and the tag indicates it was originally Aloha Green which is a color people either love or hate. It's nicely done.

Looking at the firewall it appears to be a heater delete car.

The interior shots indicate it's got the 49/50 Kaiser style heater in it which many early Js did. It's likely just by-passed for whatever reason.  In order to work properly it would need the passenger side air vent/duct installed. Doesn't make it a bad car by any means.

Factory paperwork lists at least 4 different part numbers for HJ heaters:

1.  100171     This is the grey box with bakelite plastic lever on left front and the "K" emblem, first announced 9/12/50 hot water type

2.  100238     This has two fans, one for recirculation of air in car, the other blows hot air up into defroster slits.  11/3/50  has doors

3.  100141     Substituted for 100238 due to supplier issues, is the 1951 Kaiser unit - Memo from factory dated 4/4/51

4.  100302     Replacement for 100238, recirculating with defroster hook-up.  First announced 12/21/51.

Only the "air conditioner" type heater (100171) is indicated as requiring the air duct on right side for proper operation.

The ebay listing says 134 cu in engine but picture shows a 6 cyl which I thought was 161 cu in? I am not near where I can look that up. Am I wrong?

The car does have the 161 Six cylinder in it.  I've learned never to trust what an ebay ad states.  Often times the seller doesn't know or goes by what someone told them.

Regarding the heater and air vents - I stand corrected.  The parts manual shows that heater sans air ducts and the shop manual states "A recirculating heater with twin defrosters is also available. This heater does not incorporate the use of a fresh air duct, instead, it heats and recirculates air within the passenger compartment..."

I've also seen the '47/'48 style "Air Conditioner" installed in at least 3 early Aloha Green HJs as well. I think either of these heaters would be better than the 100171 which was not very efficient.

While I don't have any factory document on this,  I heard about use of the 1947-48 type "air conditioner" heater/defroster unit used because there were problems getting the "proper" units from time to time during 1951.  After all, it;s hard to make a new car sale in the northern states during the winter if you can't put a heater in it.  We're hoping to have a number of HJ's at this years National Convention in Oregon and I hope we have a mix of heaters.   Interestingly, the  100302 heater box looks a lot like the unit Sears offered for the Allstates.

Yes, it looks like all you have to do is replace a panel on the front. One has 'Henry J'  written vertically on it and the other has 'Allstate' written vertically on it.

Car has been relisted as it did not meet reserve on the last offering...

It has been relisted six times. I was top bidder once at $10,200. It is for sale on the dealers web site for $35,000. It was  AACA  top prize winner 20 years ago.
