49 Virginian on eBay
« on: February 08, 2011, 02:34:26 PM »
Does anyone know anything about this car?
Has anyone seen it in person?
Is it a scam?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1949-Kaiser-Virginian-12-000-original-miles-/140508941510

It was my understanding that the Virginian was never produced in this color combination but that's from years old information. Also of interest is the cloth interior. I'm not an expert on this model but never seen one tht wasn't leather interior.
I've asked for pictures of the ID and Serial number plates.

You couldn't properly restore one for the opening bid. If it is truly a 12K mile car and is as nice as the pix, then I believe it to be a good buy!

Crosslake, MN is about 175 miles from me. It's amazing how many of them are crawling out of Northern MN. The price is a bit steep for me but if it was warm out, I might go look at it.

Lew Retzer made an interesting point when we talked on the phone earlier this week.  There are a number of cars that (at the time, at least) used to be seen at meets but haven't made an appearance in decades.  It seems that these cars are now appearing for sale.

I remember there was a near pristine black '51 Frazer that was owned by a fellow known as "Colenell Johnson."  He used to bring it to all the HOA and Midwest Division meets in the early 70s.  He sold the car to former KFOC President Alan Payne who continued to bring it out.  Last I saw it was at the Midwest Division meet in Minneapolis in Sept 1976.  I always wonder where that car went. It was a beauty and I've not seen nor heard of it since I got back into the hobby in the late 90s.

I also remember the Frazer as I saw it at many HOA and Midwestern meets that I attended with my father, Loren Holt. It was indeed a beauty.
My Dad was friends with Alan and the Colenell, but I lost track of them as I also was out of the club for many years. My original number was 1913 so as you can tell I was out of the club for quite awhile. I remember Alan had a few nice cars and owned a shoe store, I believe it was in Galesburg, Il.
My Dad and I attended many meets together and he had a blue '54 Kaiser he showed at the national in Hershey. We also attended the return to Willow Run.
I am now back in the club and have a '51 Henry J deluxe, and when I joined I was younger and had a '51 J 4 cyl.
Its good to read the forum as it brings back lots of good memories.

I can't figure out why someone with a $30 K car for sale is not willing to invest a few $ in enough pics to really show the car to prospects.

Thanks for the memories too Don. I think Alan Payne was from Bushnell, IL but I could be wrong. My dad's KFOC number was 1907 so you joined right about when he did. I was at the return to Willow Run in 1974 too. We drove there in a 1948 Kaiser Custom, left Dearborn and went onto Toronto, then down to Washington DC past a recently vacated Nixon Whitehouse. I have some great home movies of that trip.  I remember it seemed like the grounds of the Dearborn Inn was nothing but KF products all week. My memory wants to say there were 300+ KF products there but I have nothing to back that up with.
Regarding that Virginian - I'd be surprised if it brought $30,000 but you never know. At that auction in AZ in November 2009, a pretty decent, albiet in need of full restoration, Virginian went for $800.

The Colenell also had a 49 Virginian that he had swapped in an Olds 303 with a hydramatic. We attended a meet in Marion, OH in the 60s and he came rolling in with that car. I recall my father being taken with the V8 and spent alot of time pouring over the installation. Of course, we got a ride in the car and I recall that it really did fly along...but then again, old man Johnson was known for having a lead foot!

I have no idea what happened to both of his cars. If memory serves, he was from the Cincinnati area so the cars may be down that way yet!

You're right Lowell it was Bushnell, and you're right about the Dearborn Inn,and I think you're right about the number of cars it seems like I heard and read that somewhere. Thanks for the reply and the memories.

I've been told by the seller that there are no additional photos of the car available.

I bought the car.  Just got back to St. Louis from Crosslake, MN....  about a 1,400 mile drive round-trip straight north and back .  It was very honestly described.... Genuine 11,800 mile car with original nylon top, and on the original 7.10x15" Goodyear Super-Cushions, no joke!  This car is truly a dream come true.  Zero rust, and the best original cloth interior I have ever seen in a KF car.   I'll post pictures of it soon.
