1949 Kaiser Speedometer

I downloaded an app on my iPhone that mimics a speedometer. I drove my truck and it matched the read out perfectly. I drove my Kaiser and the speedometer registers 10 mph faster than I'm actually going at any speed. I've got the correct sized bias ply tires on it. Anyone know how to get it to read more accurately?

 Most of the time you change spedo readings by changing the gear on the trans end of the spedo cable.

Very true about the speedometer pinion on the cable. They were matched up to the rear end and depending on what rear axle ratio  you have, that determines which gear you need. It is possible the one on your car was changed. The parts book and shop manual should tell you which one you need and will list the number of teeth. I don't have that info handy but someone should.

Get used to the Kaiser speedometer being inaccurate. Publications back in the day noted speedometer differences and most every make had their own issues. Yours is typical of the marque, the speedometer says you're going faster than you really are.

But, you can try different drive gear to see if you can get closer.

Take your car on an interstate. They generally have mileposts every tenth mile. Take an assistant to watch the posts. Go ten miles to get an accurate reading. If your odometer is accurate within 03% you have the right gear. Early 50's speedometers typically read faster than your going.

I've an app on my iPhone that gives an accurate reading so I know precisely how inaccurate the speedometer is. My guess is it is just off and as long as I know that I'm ok.
