6 Cylinder vs 4 Cyl air cleaner?
« on: February 11, 2010, 07:34:29 PM »
Still working on our '51 Henry J.  It has an aftermarket open circle air cleaner on it that i'd like to take back to original.  Have a possible source for an OEM air cleaner from a 6 cylinder, but see in the parts guide that there were different part numbers for 6 cyl and 4 cyl.  I believe both engines had 1 barrel carbs, anyone know what the differences were between the two air cleaners?  Will a 6 cylinder oil bath cleaner work on a 4 cylinder car?
thanks in advance
Dave

Hi David, the 4 cylinder engine has a much longer stroke and sits much higher so an air cleaner from a 6 cylinder will not fit due to that reason. The four cylinder has an air cleaner that fits on the carb and is offset and requires a support to the engine mount to stablize it. It looks like this -

The six cylinder has a much shorter stroke and sits lower in the engine compartment and it is quite different than the four. It looks like this -

Also, just some more FYI, the carburettors are different too. They look exactly the same but are different inside (larger passages etc.). The four uses a Carter YF820 and the six uses a YF833. Putting a YF820 on a six doesn't work very well.

The 2 air cleaners are quite different.     When we get home I will post photos of them.

Thanks, Fid and PNW.  That helps a bunch.  Guess the 6cyl cleaner won't do me much good!

Does anyone have a 4 cyl air cleaner they want to part with?
thanks again

I guess I didn't address that part of your post.  Terry Zeug may have one, I know he had one not too long ago. Contact him at zeugskfparts@roadrunner.com
