Kaiser Forum / Removing Ignition Switch
« on: January 18, 2022, 09:23:25 PM »
I need to re-chrome the dash on my 51 kaiser and need to remove the ignition switch. I stick a small wire into the hole on the bottom of the tumbler with the key inserted and feel a spring depress but then nothing comes apart.  The manual says nothing about this.  What am I doing wrong?

Two unmolested Henry Js.  Both worth saving. Neither are mine

Nice, no trunk but a 6cyl, maybe OD?

Gordie: There is only one way that the kit fits on the car and that is when the support bracket fits in back of the tire.

Uncle John:  How is the small hubcap on the Kit special?  Is it cut to accommodate the support bracket?  That is a beautiful car!!

I think the problem is that my Kit has an additional inner ring that seems to preclude mounting a hubcap even if it were cut to accommodate the support bracket.

Wow, so many Kaiser-types suggesting answers!  Thanks so much.

Every manual and parts list (from the KFOCI Handbook and the repair manual) simply describe it as a 'special hubcap', but do not describe how it is 'special' or show a detailed picture.

I am attaching a picture of my Continental Kit, I thought for sure it is a Kaiser product (is it indeed Kaiser?).  The special hubcap must have a cut out to accommodate the black support bracket.  In addition, does anyone know how a hubcap could fit with the inner (rusty) disk?

Folks;
I am putting together a 1951 Golden Dragon (with a padded top) and a Continental Kit.  The hubcap on the Continental Kit must have a special cut out to accommodate the tire carrier bracket.  I have plenty of the hubcaps, that you describe, but would have to cut a notch out for it to fit.  In addition, my metal (donut shaped) tire cover does not seem to allow enough clearance to accommodate the hubcap (once the notch is cut out) either.  Maybe I am missing something.  I  thought getting a hubcap off of a Continental Kit would be easier than cutting a notch or figuring out the tire cover and notched hubcap fit together.

A junk yard claims to have a special hub cap that fits on a Continental Kit on a 1952 Kaiser Virginian.   Attached are pictures of what they have.  It looks like a regular hubcap and has no provisions (cut-outs) to clear the tire carrier, or any way to attach to the metal sidewall cover.

Is this indeed a special hubcap for the Continental Kit?  If not could someone post a picture of a real one?

Thanks

Fid  No, I have not had any luck yet in finding my car.  I was indeed referring the the KF registry, but I did assume that the people listed would be the actual owners of the cars rather than simply those who submitted the information.  Should this list, or could this list be changed/updated to show the present owners of the cars?

Fid:   That is an absolutely beautiful car!! and what mine would look like if I had finished it (except for being saddle bronze metallic rather than Caribbean Coral).

The car needed upholstery and paint when I sold it.  It had the Vagabond scripts (Vs broken off), large wheel covers, and chrome around the windshield (like a 6 cyl should -not like yours Russ).

The left rear quarter panel had turquoise paint under the saddle bronze metallic and I always assumed (imagined) the story was that the car was damaged during shipping to the dealer so it was sent back to the factory.  But it was late in the year so they repaired it with left over parts and made a Vagabond out of it and sold it as a ’52. (Nice story and I’m sticking to it).

I purchased the car in Chico CA in 1980 where it has been stored in a barn for many years.  I rebuilt it mechanically, drove it and had to sell it in Las Vegas in about 1997 to a Jeff Campbell.  Never heard from him again.

Vagabond Russ K.;  Don’t be cute.  You know I owned every single Henry J in Blue Diamond, Nevada and they all had continental kits.!

It did not look like that at the time of sale.  It did not have a two-toned paint job.  It was 'saddle bronze metallic'.  It had a trunk and a continental kit and looked like the one in the picture on page 154 in "Last Onslaught . ."   They do have black plastic hood ornaments.

What is the history of the one in your pictures?

I was told I had to sell my 1952 Henry J Vagabond years ago in Las Vegas NV, and would love to get it back.  I can’t find the present owner, and the KFOCI registry still has it in my name, so I assume that the new owner is not a member - somewhat disheartening.

The Serial Number is K524-1047318.  It was a 6 w/ OD, with a Continental kit, a trunk, and dinosaur vinyl, and the Paint is the beautiful Saddle Bronze Metallic (235).  It had been completely rebuilt and rewired.  Everything worked and I used to drive it to work.

Does anyone know about this car?  Can anyone, or does anyone know how to trace cars (maybe in official State records NV, CA etc.)?
(If you find this car no one will ask how it was done.)

I do hope it has not been crushed or abused as it was a beautiful car (in the eyes of a Kaiser-type at least)

Thanks

Thanks all for the encouragement in finding my Henry J Vagabond.  I sold it in Las Vegas in about 1997 or '98 so I have been patient.  Since it is still registered to me in the Club, I assume that the new owner is not a member - somewhat disheartening.

If anyone sees this car please let me know.

Is anyone else in this predicament?
