INFORMATION ALL K-F OWNERS SHOULD HAVE

Reading most of the postings made by new people, it seems to me that they have no idea what support manuals, etc they should have in their posession.  The following items are, in my opinion, MUSTS to assist in restoration of cars, identifying what parts they may need (most K-F vendors go by number rather than "the left handed such and such for my 1951 Whatzit") and routine maintenance of their vehicles (what needs attention and how often):

The FACTORY shop manual covering your particular car.  Best manual for a Henry J or Allstate is the 1951-52-53 HJ book, best for a 1947-48 Kaiser or frazer is the blue cover 1947-48-49 (which also works for 1950 model year cars) manual.  1952 and 1953 Kaisers require the 1951 Kaiser and Frazer manual plus the 1953 issued supplement for the later cars.  1954-55 Kaisers do not have a manual as such...you use the 1952-53 model year manuals with the various service bulletins issued by Kaiser-Willys Sales Corporation, and the 1954 issue Supercharger manual.  Power steering equipped cars need the Power Steering manual.  Willys products use the Mechanics Manuals and Body Manuals for their appropriate year/model vehicle.

The FACTORY parts book is also a must.  Go with the Illustrated versions whenever you can (1954-55 Kaiser is not illustrated) There are supplements to the 1951 model year parts book to cover 1952 Virginian, 1952 second series and 1953 model year Kaisers, as well as supplements for 1952 Vagabond, 1952 Corsair and 1953 Corsair HJ's.  1954 HJ's use the materials that would apply to the 1953 models.

the various manuals tend to show up for sale at the parts/stuff for sale areas at many division level meets.  Otherwise, why not run a WANTED ad in the KFOCI MONTHLY BULLETIN?  It doesn't cost you anything if you are a member, and will reach the entire regular/life membership of this club.

I will totally agree on this .  I've worked with some of my friends who are in my local club to restore a '55 Ford, a 52 Olds 98, a 53 Pontiac and of course my Kaisers.  I joined the KF club in '88 and when I started on the 53 manhattan, I knew I needed a parts and a shop manual.  I talked to & bought them from Fred Walker and never regretted it.  The Kaiser parts manual is the only factory manual that details every nut bolt and washer and is in most cases is illustrated. So if one is interested in correectness this is the only way to go.  I've used the o/d wiring diagram and test procedures, from the kaiser manuals  to troubleshoot any car with a Borg-Warner o/d.  We even use the 51 Kaiser shop manual to disassemble and rebuild the manual transmission in his 55 Ford. I also tell every new member comming into our local club that the 1st thing he should do is join the major club of his margue.  We've all been there but so have they.  Keep up the good work Jack.

I agree about using the parts manuals to find correct nuts, bolts, fasteners etc.  When I installed the Continental kit on my '52 HJ Vagabond, I only had the parts which were removed from a car years ago. The guy I bought them from did not save/have all the fasteners. The parts list was invaluable at helping me ID what I need to get a true authentic look/install of that kit. Most fasteners were available at my local Ace Hardware.

During 1948 and into 1949, the factory issued a number of good service bulletins covering parts changes and other things.   These items came out after the green cover book came out, but the information made its way into the blue cover 1947-48-49 Factory Service manual.  Some of the repair procedures listed are better explained in the later book than in the Green cover 1947-48 edition.   That's why the blue cover version is recommended over the Green but there is still a lot of good info in the earlier book.

I worked at the trade all my life starting by changing the engine in a Model A ford when I was 14 years old. The day I retired I was still buying manuals. Why people think they can restore something they have never seen before with no reference materials is beyond me. Good thread.

If you are unable to find certain service manuals or parts lists, take heart.  KFOCI HANDBOOK Version 5.0 has the following original items scanned.  If you cannot find the actual material, this should be a help and can be printed on your own computer if you want hard copy:

Hydra-Matic shop manual transmission models K-50,K-51,K-52. Shop manual for 1951 K-511,K-512,F-515,F516. Service time schedule 1951 models. Kaiser-Frazer uniform accounting manual.
