Front Coil Spring replacement
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:43:17 AM »
Hey Frazer experts - There is a fellow who lives by me that is restoring a 1948 Frazer Manhattan. He sent me this e-mail "I was wondering if you knew what the spring size is for the front coils of the Manhattan.  Are they the same size as any other cars such as Chevy’s.  I am thinking that I may have to possibly replace them but not sure if they are a “universal size.”  Would you happen to know by chance?"   Anyone have an answer for him?  I'm sure he'd appreciate it. I'm also going to recommend this page to him as well. Thanks.

New springs show up occasionally on eBay but any good spring shop should be able to supply you with new ones.

An old coil spring catalog of mine says they should be the same as 42-48 Pontiac models.  I, too, have seen them on eBay once in a while.

Someone posted a link to Kanter for brake parts in the Kaiser group. I noted they also supply coil springs and they list the same set as used on all 47-55 KF. They will run you just under $250 delivered in the US.

I have a set of Moogs around somewhere I bought some years ago and I think they are the number 536. I will see if I can find them.

I think the springs used on KF and other 40-50s cars were hard to match in perfect pairs and this is noted in the shop manuals when they reference paint markings on pairs. Typically one of the pair will be somewhat stronger and the paint codes direct putting the stronger one on the left. I don't think any modern coils have these markings but I may be wrong. I note that Moog advertised "Matched" coils even in the 50s.

Thanks so much Ben!  Hopefully, this fellow will be able to get what he needs to do the job right.  Based on all this good info, there's a probability.

I bought the coils from Kanters and got a call saying the coils could be 1 to 2 inches longer. I just got them but have not installed. Does anone know the measurements on the coils? Has anyone bought coils from Kanters?
