Would someone post an exploded view of the upper column showing the parts, or a link to the diagram. Thanks, Henry.

Thanks Fid, but I should have said inside the column and steering shaft parts at the top just under the steering wheel. I took mine apart and did not take pictures of how it goes together, should never trust my memory. Henry

Unfortunately, the Parts book doesn't break it down in illustrations, nor does the shop manual.

There is a tapered sleeve that centers the shaft and a spring and some kind of a wear plate. I put the sleeve in then the spring then the steering wheel and nut. Someone must know the order. I will try and post some pic's of the parts.

Ahh... I thought you were referring the molding right where it meets the dash.  That's what I was thinking of when I heard "upper column" - that top molding. I guess "what we have here is a failure tuh communicate" - yes, what Terry posted should be helpful then!

Attached are a couple of pictures of the actual which may help too - they won't show the spring but they may help.
