door spring / rod needed 1953
« on: November 13, 2016, 07:41:12 PM »
The Front Left door ( drivers door ) on my 53 Kaiser Manhattan will not stay closed, I found a spring/rod that broke or rusted in half inside the door bottom. Does anyone have these or a parts car I can get the part from? If not, I noticed they are thin, can I take a coat hanger and make the piece ? On the photo, you see the round button in the center,  just right of the "Inside locking rod" there is a spring or rod the goes around that button, that's what I need, without it, my door will not lock shut and just open back up. It keeps the door closed.

It's easiest to replace the entire door latch mechanism. The rod you mention is spring steel so a bent coat hanger won't fix it. I'm busy packing my shop for a move but I don't think I've boxed the latches yet. I'll check tomorrow to see if I have either an NOS or good used latch.
