888 and 999 are definitely custom colors and fortunately or unfortunately they can be any color that you want them to be.  To be original you must gather what evidence you can from the vehicle but no one can challenge you on the color as there is no reference surviving that illustrates what these custom colors were.

I agree it is up to the owner to correctly restore, especially if it is an expensive body off restoration and traces of originality may be lost.  Still, I would expect some evidence might exist either actually - as in what Jack Mueller might have - or antecdotally as in "Fred Walker owned that car in the 70's and it was purple"  [example only] 
No old cars owned.
