I saw that one a while back. We sure have changed since then. I'm just glad to have some fuel oil burners around town.

I'm old enough to remember the days when folks here in North Carolina that lived on dirt roads would collect drain oil at local service stations, and then spray it on the road in front of their house to keep the dust down.

Oiling the road is still common practice here. We have a few township roads that are unpaved and every spring and fall, the roads are oiled using waste oil. Keeps the dust down but can't be doing the environment any favors.

We use to oil the railroad tie walls in the yard. Kept them from breaking down.

What The Heck ! It came from the ground in the first place .

Yes, the oil came from the ground, unfortunately there are about 20% additives per quart of oil,  plus the metals from the wearing of parts in the engine.   There are lots of pathogens that eat oil as well as plants.   Ford had to do that at the River Rouge plant from when it was in operation.  Found that out on a tour.

However, I used to dump oil back behind the garage.  When I put an addition on many years later and had to dig up the ground for the foundation,  the oil was in tar clumps just as I had poured it.  None of it "leaked" into the ground!!

That is funny,I am putting used oil in the post holes to preserve the posts, always have!! Keeps the weeds and grass down also. LM #3894

Dad always found a patch of weeds , unwanted bush etc. to pour the oil on . Even put it on dogs with mange to help cure it .

Oil does come from the ground but it's far below the relatively shallow depth where potable water is found. Deep water that's pumped up with oil from fracking depths is very salty. Something the anti fracking crowd never mentions.

Alright Guys . My post was meant to show a little humor . I know there are useful things that used oil can be used for such as waste oil heaters . I saved all the oil from my company trucks once to soak a set of dozer tracks that had frozen up (not much , but some ) . IT worked and then gave the oil to a local shop that burned waste oil to heat their shop .

  It only takes one quart of oil to make 25,000 gal of water undrinkable.
